BL4 Legendary Grenade Mods — Complete Guide

Grenades in BL4 aren't just for damage and honestly it took me way too long to figure this out, they apply status effects, spawn additional grenades, heal, and debuff enemies and stuff like that, and here's every legendary grenade mod I've found ranked by utility and damage, your mileage may vary but these are the ones that actually work.

S-Tier Legendary Grenades

The Tesla Coil / Recurring Hex (Atlas) is the best grenade for mobbing and tbh it's not even close, seeks enemies and creates a large damage field that just melts everything, Cryo/Shock/Radiation variants and the Recurring prefix means it bounces twice so you get three damage fields per throw and the radiation version is basically a mini-nuke that also debuffs enemies, drops from world drop or specific bosses and definately worth farming. Then there's the Mitosis Hunter-Seeker (Tediore) which is a homing grenade that splits into 3 child grenades and it's excellent for trigger-happy anointments like On Grenade Throw, drops from a specific boss and I recieved one with a god roll that carried me through most of Mayhem 10. And the Cloning Maddening Tracker (Tediore) is honestly the holy grail for Moze builds ngl, homing grenade that clones on bounce and each clone tracks, you get 10+ hits per throw which is insane for On Grenade Throw anointment builds, world drop so just farm vending machines and pray to RNGesus.

A-Tier Legendary Grenades

The Springs Epicenter (Torgue) creates a singularity that pulls enemies together and it's excellent for grouping, throw it into a crowd and then swap to your AoE weapon and everything dies at once, drops from a specific boss and imo it's one of the most underrated grenades in the game. Quasar (Tediore) is a shock singularity grenade that pulls and damages and it's excellent for mobbing, drops from Tyreen and the farm isn't too bad. Also It's Piss (Tediore) is a pure utility grenade that creates a pool debuffing enemies by -20% damage taken, throw it at a boss before your damage window and everything hits 20% harder, it's a utility pick but kind of essential for speed kills and you get the idea.

Grenade Builds / Anointments

Moze is the grenade Vault Hunter and honestly she's basically unkillable with the right setup, Vampyr skill heals on grenade damage so combine with CMT for instant full heal and it's kind of disgusting how much sustain you get from one button press. On Grenade Throw anointments trigger on each grenade and child grenade so with Mitosis Hunter-Seeker you get four triggers from one throw. While sliding throw grenade with Mitosis Hunter-Seeker means endless grenade spam and it's so satisfying to just slide around the map throwing infinite grenades while healing to full every time, definately the most fun build in the game imo.

Why Grenades Are More Than Just Explosions

I used to treat grenades as an afterthought and just chucked whatever had the highest damage number and forgot about it, and honestly for the campaign that works fine, but once you get into Mayhem mode and start optimizing builds grenades become one of the most important gear slots and it's not always about damage. The best grenades in BL4 are utility tools that happen to also deal damage and I've died to bosses so many times before I realized I should be using grenades for healing and debuffing instead of just damage. The Recurring Hex creates a massive damage field that applies elemental effects to everything in it and the Mitosis Hunter-Seeker spawns child grenades that each trigger anointments and the Cloning Maddening Tracker hits 10 plus times per throw for healing and proc effects, a well-rolled grenade with the right anointment does more for your build than a third weapon slot and I'm not even exaggerating. And on Moze specifically grenades are literally how you stay alive because Vampyr heals for 20 percent of missing health per grenade hit and a CMT hitting 10 plus times per throw is multiple full heals per grenade, you go from near death to full HP in one button press and it's honestly the most satisfying feeling in the game. On other characters grenades apply element effects, debuff enemies, group them up, or just clear trash and you're leaving a lot of power on the table if you're still treating grenades like simple explosives, which tbh I did for way too long before someone told me to try a CMT on Moze and it changed my entire approach to builds and stuff like that. The It's Piss grenade is another one that people sleep on, it debuffs enemies by 20 percent increased damage taken which doesn't sound like much but on Mayhem 10 that's the difference between a one-cycle and a three-cycle boss kill and definately worth carrying even if you never throw it for damage.

Top Picks For Different Purposes

The Recurring Hex is the best general-use grenade in the game and I've tried pretty much every legendary grenade in BL4 so I'm not just saying this, it seeks enemies, creates a large damage field, and applies elements to everything in it, the Recurring prefix means it bounces twice so you get three damage fields per throw and in radiation element it's basically a mini-nuke that also debuffs enemies. For Moze builds specifically the Cloning Maddening Tracker is the holy grail and tbh finding one with the right parts is harder than killing most raid bosses, it's a homing grenade that spawns a clone on bounce and both the original and clone track enemies, with the right parts you get 10 plus hits per throw and each hit procs Vampyr for healing, each hit procs Pull the Holy Pin for crit chance, each hit procs Means of Destruction for ammo regen, it's not a grenade, it's a full utility package that happens to be shaped like a grenade and once you use it you can't go back to anything else. The Mitosis Hunter-Seeker is the best grenade for on grenade throw anointments because it splits into three child grenades on deployment, that's four grenade events from one throw, four triggers of your anointment, and for builds that need constant anointment uptime this is the play and definately worth the farm even though the dedicated drop is kind of annoying. The It's Piss grenade is a pure utility pick that drops a pool debuffing enemies by 20 percent increased damage taken, throw it at a boss before your damage window and everything hits 20 percent harder, it's one of those things that's boring on paper but in practice it cuts your boss kill times by a noticeable amount. And the Quasar is fantastic for mobbing, shock singularity that pulls enemies together and damages them, group everything up, then swap to your AoE weapon and clear them all at once, it's so satisfying and I love using it on maps with lots of small enemies and stuff like that.

Build Synergies That Make Grenades Essential

Moze and the CMT is the most famous grenade interaction in BL4 and it deserves to be because Vampyr heals per grenade hit and the CMT hits 15 plus times, that's multiple full heals from one grenade and it's honestly kind of broken. Pull the Holy Pin makes grenades able to crit and the CMT's many hits give many crit chances and Means of Destruction returns ammo on splash and the CMT's hits all count as splash, you literally regenerate ammo faster than you can spend it while healing to full with every grenade, it's the engine that makes endgame Moze work and without it she's just a worse version of herself. Amara uses grenades differently and her best grenade interaction is with the action skill element, her Infusion skill converts some gun damage to her action skill element and grenade anointments like on action skill end gain 50 percent bonus element damage stack with this, a shock Recurring Hex with a shock Infusion means every damage source is shock which deletes shields instantly and you get this beautiful synergy where everything just works together. Zane's Duct Tape Mod skill gives him a chance to throw a free grenade when he fires his gun and if you pair this with the It's Piss grenade you're randomly debuffing enemies without even trying, his Seein' Red capstone activates kill skills on action skill use and some class mods have on grenade kill activate kill skills which creates a feedback loop of permanent kill skill uptime that I discovered by accident and it's kind of disgusting how much uptime you get. FL4K gets the least direct grenade synergy but even he benefits because his Hunter's Eye skill highlights crit spots and grenades that hit crit spots proc his Megavore capstone, a Hunter-Seeker grenade that tracks to crit spots gives FL4K free Megavore procs from grenades and tbh it's not as strong as Moze's grenade game but it's a nice bonus. Also one thing I forgot to mention but the Quasar's singularity pulls enemies in and pulled enemies take bonus damage from splash attacks, the game doesn't tell you this but enemies in a singularity state have a hidden debuff so throw a Quasar, group everything, swap to your Flakker or Plaguebearer and watch them all die to bonus splash damage, it's one of those secret interactions that makes you feel like a genius when you figure it out.

Common Grenade Mistakes To Avoid

Throwing grenades at random is the biggest waste of potential damage and I used to do this constantly, just spamming grenades whenever the cooldown was up without thinking about why, but grenades have cooldowns and most characters get maybe 8 to 10 grenades base so every throw should have a purpose, grouping enemies, applying elements, triggering anointments, or healing, don't just spam them at single targets unless you're on Moze with grenade regen. Second mistake. Not matching the grenade element to your build because if you're running a fire damage build with all fire bonuses a shock grenade is doing nothing for you, your grenade element should either match your build's element for bonus damage or cover a weakness your build has, and tbh I spent like 50 hours running a shock grenade on a fire Moze build and wondering why my grenades felt weak. Third thing, people sleep on grenade parts and prefixes and this drives me nuts because a Cloning Maddening Tracker is good but a standard Tracker without those prefixes is worthless, the prefix completely changes how the grenade functions and you need to learn which prefixes matter for each grenade type. Divider doubles the child grenades. Recurring adds bounces. Mitosis splits into three. Cloning adds a clone. Maddening increases speed. These prefixes matter more than the grenade's actual damage number and I've seen people throw away god roll CMTs because the damage number was low without realizing the parts were what mattered. And the biggest mistake honestly, not using grenades at all, some players literally forget to throw grenades during fights but you have the button, it's free damage, free healing, free debuffs, use it, make it a habit to throw a grenade at the start of every fight and you'll notice your survivability and clear speed both improve, definately one of those simple things that seperates good players from great ones.

Advanced Grenade Tech Worth Learning

The CMT's homing behavior changes based on your movement and I discovered this completely by accident while strafing during a boss fight, if you're standing still the grenades spread out but if you're strafing they converge on your movement direction, you can control where the grenades go by how you move after throwing and once you practice this in the firing range you can direct grenade clusters to specific targets which is huge for focusing down priority enemies. Hunter-Seeker grenades have a hidden crit modifier that I'm not 100% sure about the exact numbers on but they deal bonus damage when their projectiles hit crit spots, so if you're farming a boss with a large crit zone like Graveward's chest you throw Hunter-Seekers at the crit spot for massive bonus damage and it's kind of disgusting how much damage they do. Another tech that most people don't know about, grenade anointments that trigger on action skill end stack with on grenade throw anointments so you can throw a grenade, activate your action skill, and the grenade is still applying its effects while your action skill anointment kicks in, it's two layers of damage bonuses that overlap for a few seconds and the burst damage window is honestly insane. On Moze, the while sliding throw free grenade anointment combined with a snowdrift artifact lets you slide around the map throwing infinite CMTs at zero cost, it's a full heal and full ammo refill every time you slide and I'm pretty sure this is not how the devs intended this to work but it works and I'm not complaining. And the secret interaction most players never discover, the Quasar's singularity pulls enemies in and pulled enemies take bonus damage from splash attacks, the game doesn't tell you this but enemies in a singularity state have a hidden debuff so throw a Quasar, group everything, swap to your Flakker or Plaguebearer, and watch them all die to bonus splash damage, it's one of those things that makes you feel like you're breaking the game. Also the It's Piss debuff stacks with other debuffs like FL4K's Hunter's Eye and Amara's Laid Bare so you can stack multiple damage taken debuffs on a boss and the numbers get kind of stupid, definately something to try if you're going for speed kills or whatever.
