BL4 Legendary Pistols — Complete Guide & Tier List

From Jakobs revolvers to Maliwan charge-up blasters, pistols in BL4 range from reliable backups to build-defining powerhouses and honestly they're my favorite weapon type in the game. This guide ranks every legendary pistol, tells you exactly where to farm them, and stuff like that, your mileage may vary but these are what carried me through Mayhem 10.

Lemme start with the best ones.

S-Tier Legendary Pistols

The Maliwan Free Radical is a shock-element splash pistol that melts shields and chains to nearby enemies through Amara's Ties That Bind and honestly it's the best pistol in the game, drops from a specific boss on Eden-6 with a 10% drop chance and definately worth farming. Then the Jakobs Light Show is a 4-projectile full-auto pistol that deals insane crit damage and fires as fast as you pull the trigger, it's ammo-efficient and a fantastic boss killer, drops from a rare spawn in Splinterlands and I've spent way too many hours farming for a god roll. And the Vladof Prompt Critical has an underbarrel rocket attachment that shoots 5 rockets on alt-fire and it's best-in-slot for Moze explosive builds, drops from Wotan the Invincible at 10% and tbh the farm is painful but the gun is worth it.

A-Tier Legendary Pistols

The Vladof Mayhem has bullet ricochet x5 per shot and it's excellent for mobbing with a higher fire rate than most ARs, drops from Power Troopers in Meridian Metroplex and it's kind of underrated imo. Torgue Unkempt Harold is the classic BL2 legend returning in BL4 with 7-pellet shotgun-like shots and sticky projectiles for bonus damage, drops from multiple bosses and it's just as good as you remember ngl. Also Maliwan 7-Twelve Twelve is a charge-up shock pistol that deals 7 projectiles per trigger pull with high damage per shot, drops from a specific side quest and definately worth doing that quest for.

Farming Routes for Pistols

Pistol farming is most efficient on bosses with dedicated drops and tbh the save-quit method is still the fastest way to get what you want, farm Light Show from the Splinterlands rare spawn because the respawn is fast and you can get like 6 runs a minute if you're quick. Free Radical drops from the Ruiner so use a high-MAYHEM modifier for better anointment rolls and the anoint makes a huge difference on this gun. For world drops, run the Slaughter Shaft or just farm Graveward like everyone else because he drops everything and dies in 30 seconds, you get the idea, it's boring but it works and etc. Also don't sleep on vending machines for pistol farming because I've found god roll Tediore pistols in random ammo vendors that outperformed dedicated drops, your mileage may vary but it's worth checking whenever you pass one.

Why Pistols Are The Most Fun Weapon Type

I've played hundreds of hours of BL4 across every Vault Hunter and every weapon type and I keep coming back to pistols because there's something about the rhythm of a good Jakobs revolver that no AR or SMG can match, one shot, one crit, one kill, it's the purest Borderlands experience and I love it so much. And the variety in the pistol category is actually insane, you've got Jakobs single-shot crit monsters that reward precision, Vladof full-auto bullet hoses with underbarrel attachments, Maliwan charge-up blasters that apply elements, Torgue sticky launchers that turn enemies into fireworks and you get the idea, the pistol slot is honestly the most flexible weapon slot in the game. Need a boss killer? Light Show or Free Radical. Need a mobbing tool? Mayhem or Unkempt Harold. Need a utility weapon? Any Tediore pistol with a good reload effect. The ammo economy on pistols is also fantastic compared to ARs and SMGs because you carry way more pistol ammo and most pistols use 1 ammo per shot, my longest Slaughter Shaft runs were all pistol-only and I never ran out of ammo once. The other thing I love about pistols is the draw speed, they pull out faster than any other weapon class when you swap and in a game about quick reactions that fraction of a second matters. Getting downed and swapping to a pistol for your Second Wind is faster than any other weapon type, I've clutched so many FFYL moments with a Light Show that a slower swap would have failed. Also the pistol crit multiplier is higher than most ARs and SMGs so if you can aim well pistols actually out-damage heavier weapons in the right hands, it's not just a backup weapon, it's a primary if you build around it properly.

Top Picks For Every Build

So the Free Radical is the best pistol in the game and I'll die on this hill, shock splash damage that chains to nearby enemies and on Amara with Ties That Bind one shot clears an entire linked group, the splash also scales with Moze's Fire in the Skag Den so it's S tier on two different Vault Hunters for completely different reasons and that's the mark of a truly great weapon. And the Light Show is the FL4K pistol ngl, four projectiles per shot at the cost of one ammo, Fade Away makes all four crit, Megavore means even outside Fade Away at least two of the four are critting, the damage output is honestly closer to a shotgun than a pistol and I've out-DPS'd Monarchs with a well-rolled Light Show on FL4K which is kind of ridiculous. Then the Unkempt Harold is the classic BL2 legend returning in BL4 and it's just as good as you remember, seven sticky projectiles per shot that detonate for bonus damage, it's technically a pistol but it plays like a pocket shotgun and on Moze with splash bonuses each sticky gets the full splash multiplier and the detonation gets another so it double dips and the damage is stupid. Also the Prompt Critical is the Moze specialist pistol with underbarrel rocket attachment that fires five rockets on alt-fire, each rocket counts as splash, each splash procs Short Fuse, each Short Fuse procs Means of Destruction, you fire rockets forever and the explosions never stop, it's basically infinite ammo with infinite explosions. And the Tizzy is for people who just want to hold the trigger and watch the world burn, Vladof pistol with a spin-up mechanic where fire rate increases the longer you hold the trigger, at max RPM it fires faster than most SMGs and the ammo consumption is surprisingly manageable, tbh it's underrated because people see the spin-up and think it's bad but once you get used to it the DPS is crazy. So there's a pistol for every build and every playstyle and I honestly think every Vault Hunter should have at least one pistol in their loadout, it's just too flexible to ignore.

Build Synergies For Maximum Pistol Damage

FL4K and the Light Show is the most obvious combo and it's still incredible, Fade Away guarantees all four projectiles crit and stack that with FL4K's crit damage bonuses from the Hunter tree and Megavore and each trigger pull is landing four crits, with a good class mod roll one Fade Away burst with the Light Show out-damages a full Monarch mag on some bosses and it's kind of disgusting. Amara and the Free Radical is my personal favorite build in the entire game because her Infusion skill adds elemental damage based on her action skill element and if you're running shock action skill with a shock Free Radical every projectile double dips on shock bonuses, then Ties That Bind links enemies together and the shared damage wipes the entire group, add in Sustainment for lifesteal and you're an immortal lightning god that never dies and stuff like that. Moze with any splash pistol is broken but the Unkempt Harold is special because each sticky projectile and its detonation both count as splash, that's 14 splash events per trigger pull, each event procs Short Fuse, each event procs Means of Destruction, you end up with infinite ammo and room-clearing explosions from what is technically a pistol and it's so satisfying to play. Zane with the Light Show is surprisingly good because of his Violent Momentum skill, the Light Show's low recoil and high fire rate let you stay mobile while aiming which keeps your speed bonus active and his barrier amp makes the already high damage Light Show projectiles hit even harder. Also Zane's Playing Dirty skill gives a chance for extra projectiles and the Light Show already has four so when it procs you're firing like 8 projectiles per shot which is just dumb. And one more synergy that people sleep on, FL4K's two fang skill gives a chance to fire an extra projectile and the Light Show's four projectiles each have their own chance to proc it, meaning sometimes you fire 8 projectiles per shot and with Fade Away guaranteeing crits on all of them the damage window is honestly broken.

Common Pistol Mistakes To Fix Right Now

Treating Jakobs pistols like Vladof pistols is the number one mistake and I see this constantly, Jakobs rewards slow deliberate aim where you're supposed to take your time, line up the crit, and fire once, but spamming a Jakobs pistol as fast as you can pull the trigger wastes ammo and misses crits and your DPS actually goes down. Vladof pistols are the opposite, hold the trigger and control the recoil, different manufacturers, completely different playstyles and you can't play them the same way. Second mistake, people farm one element of the Free Radical and call it done but shock deletes shields and does neutral damage to flesh so if you're fighting flesh-heavy enemies a radiation or fire pistol does way more work, have at least two elements and preferably three if you can stomach the grind. Third thing, ignoring the Tediore reload mechanic because Tediore pistols thrown at full magazine deal massive damage based on remaining ammo and on some builds the thrown pistol does more damage than actually shooting it, it's a legitimate boss-killing strategy to load up a Tediore pistol and chuck it at the boss and I've one-shot bosses with a thrown Tediore before. And the biggest one, people don't use the right pistol for the right range, the Unkempt Harold has slow projectiles and short range, the Light Show is hitscan with great accuracy, don't try to snipe with the Harold or brawl with the Light Show, match your engagement distance to your pistol type and you'll land way more shots. Also stop using the same pistol for every encounter, the Free Radical is amazing against shielded enemies but falls off against pure flesh, the Light Show is great against flesh but doesn't have elemental coverage, you need to swap pistols based on what you're fighting and not just stick with one gun the whole game, you get the idea. And for the love of loot learn the recoil patterns, every legendary pistol has a unique recoil signature and mastering it means the difference between 60% and 95% crit accuracy which is a massive DPS swing, test every new pistol on the Sanctuary dummy for like 5 minutes before taking it into real content.

Advanced Pistol Techniques

The Free Radical's projectile has a hidden chain range and if enemies are close together the chain bounces more times, against tightly grouped enemies in the Slaughter Shaft one Free Radical shot can chain through 10 plus enemies which is honestly insane crowd clear. To maximize this, use a Quasar grenade or Amara's Ties That Bind to group enemies first and the chain range multiplies when enemies are clustered. And the Light Show's four projectiles form a diamond pattern and at close range all four hit a single crit spot for quadruple damage, at mid range they spread enough to cover a whole enemy hitbox guaranteeing crits on FL4K even with sloppy aim, so learn the range sweet spots and you'll land way more crits. Also the Unkempt Harold stickies have a hidden interaction with the White Elephant artifact because the artifact plants sticky bombs on melee hits and if a stickied enemy dies from a melee attack while the Harold stickies are attached the White Elephant bombs detonate alongside the Harold detonations, it's two layers of explosions and it's ridiculous and I'm pretty sure this isn't intended but it works. Then the Tizzy at max spin has a recoil pattern that pulls up and left so counter-strafe to the right while firing to keep the reticle on target, it takes practice but once you master it the Tizzy becomes a laser beam at any range and definately worth the effort to learn. And the real secret pistol tech that almost nobody talks about, quick-swap between two pistols with different elements because draw speed on pistols is the fastest in the game, you can fire a shock Free Radical, swap to a fire Light Show, swap back, all faster than reloading either gun, it's the highest DPS pistol setup possible and I discovered this by accident while panic-swapping during a boss fight. Another thing, the Maggie pistol has a hidden interaction with FL4K's Leave No Trace skill because each pellet from the Maggie counts as a separate bullet for ammo regen purposes so you basically never run out of ammo if you're hitting crits, it's one of those synergies that the game never explains but it completely changes how the weapon performs. And the Infinity pistol, which doesn't consume ammo, benefits from fire rate bonuses way more than damage bonuses because its base damage is low but its infinite ammo means you can fire forever, so stack fire rate on your class mod and artifact instead of damage and you'll get way more DPS out of it.
