BL4 Legendary Shotguns Tier List & Farming Guide

Shotguns in BL4 cover everything from teh classic Jakobs lever-action to Torgue sticky explosives and Hyperion shield-piercing spread patterns and honestly they're the most fun weapon type in the game, basically, here's every legendary shotgun ranked by performance and I've tested all of these at M10 so you know what's actually worth farming

S-Tier Legendary Shotguns

The Jakobs Hellwalker is honestly my favorite weapon in the entire game and I'm not even exaggerating, it's an incendiary single-pellet shotgun taht plays a DOOM riff every time you fire it and the single-shot damage is the highest of any shotgun in BL4, drops from Road Dog in Splinterlands and best with FL4K or Amara gun damage builds, and tbh the DOOM riff alone makes it worth using but the damage backs it up. The Hyperion Face-puncher is a completely different beast because it deals melee damage instead of gun damage which means it scales with every melee bonus in the game, 14 pellets at x14 roll, essential for Amara melee builds and drops from a specific boss in Konrad's Hold, ngl, ngl this thing turns Amara into an absolute delete button. And the Maliwan Lob shoots slow-moving elemental orbs that pierce enemies with any element and massive damage per orb, drops from Graveward at 10%, kinda, and it takes some getting used to because you have to lead your shots but the damage per orb is honestly ridiculous once you figure out the timing.

A-Tier Legendary Shotguns

The Torgue Flakker is this explosive shotgun that creates a wall of explosions with excellent AoE, drops from Graveward, and it's best on Moze with splash damage because the sheer number of explosions triggers her skills constantly, honestly, but tbh the explosion pattern is random and you need to learn the range or it does nothing. The Hyperion Reflux is a corrosive SMG-shotgun hybrid with lightning chains on crit, great for mobbing groups, drops from GenIVIV, and honestly it's basically an SMG that identifies as a shotgun and I love it for that. The Tediore Tech Support reloads by throwing the gun as a turret that shoots and returns ammo on reload, excellent utility, drops from Maliwan Takedown, tbh, and it's one of those weapons that seems gimmicky until you use it and realize it's actually really good.

Shotgun Build Synergies

Face-puncher is build-defining for Amara melee and you pair it with the Brawl tree and Unleash the Dragon artifact and the damage gets genuinely stupid tbh Hellwalker is best on FL4K with Fade Away for guaranteed crit chains and watching health bars vanish in one shot never gets old basically Flakker on Moze with splash skill tree turns entire rooms into explosions and you literally never run out of ammo because the splash procs Moze's ammo regen constantly, it's kind of broken tbh.

Why Shotguns Are The Most Fun You'll Have In BL4

I'm gonna say something controversial but shotguns in BL4 aren't just the most fun weapon type they're also the most versatile if you know what you're doing and I've played hundreds of hours across every weapon type so I'm not just making this up. You've got Jakobs single-pellet monsters that feel like cannons you've got Torgue sticky launchers that turn enemies into ticking time bombs you've got Hyperion shield-piercing spread guns you've got Maliwan elemental orbs and the variety is kinda insane tbh literally And the thing is every single Vault Hunter has at least one shotgun build that's endgame viable, Amara melee with the Face-puncher, FL4K crit with the Hellwalker, Moze splash with the Flakker, even Zane speed builds work with something like the Reflux for mobbing. The other thing about shotguns is the feedback because you pull the trigger and things just evaporate and the Hellwalker plays a DOOM riff every time you fire it and how can you not love that honestly imo I've tried every weapon type extensively and I keep coming back to shotguns because they're just satisfying in a way that rifles and SMGs can't match and the risk-reward of getting close enough to land all your pellets while not getting downed is what makes the combat loop click for me, it's just more engaging than sitting at range plinking away at health bars and all that.

Top Picks That Actually Justify The Hype

The Hellwalker is famous for a reason and honestly it deserves every bit of the reputation because one pellet does massive damage and it's incendiary which is the best general-use element, the DOOM riff is just a bonus but it's a really good bonus ngl. On FL4K with Fade Away every single shot is a guaranteed crit and the damage numbers look like phone numbers and I've one-shot badass enemies at M10 with this setup literally The Face-puncher is a completely different beast because it deals melee damage instead of gun damage which means it scales with every melee bonus in the game and Amara with a Brawler Ward shield and an Unleash the Dragon artifact turns this thing into a delete button that honestly feels unfair. The Lob is weird and I love it because slow moving orbs pierce through enemies and it takes some getting used to since you have to lead your shots but the damage per orb makes up for it and on bosses with big hitboxes one orb can hit multiple times as it passes through honestly For mobbing the Reflux is my go-to with corrosive damage and chain lightning on crit so you fire into a group of armored enemies and watch the lightning bounce between them, it's basically an SMG that identifies as a shotgun and I'm here for it. And the Flakker, look the Flakker takes practice because the explosion pattern is random and the range is short but when it works it clears an entire room in one shot and on Moze with splash damage bonuses the Flakker is the most destructive weapon in the game bar none, like genuinely nothing else comes close for room clearing.

Build Synergies For Every Vault Hunter

Amara and the Face-puncher is the most obvious build in BL4 and it's still incredible because the shotgun gets every melee bonus you have, that means her Brawl tree skills her class mod melee bonuses her artifact melee bonus everything stacks and with a Brawler Ward shield that gives 300% melee damage on break and a White Elephant artifact that attaches sticky bombs on melee hits each Face-puncher pellet is both dealing melee damage AND planting explosives and it's absurd and I love it. FL4K with the Hellwalker is the opposite approach being pure gun damage where Fade Away guarantees crits the Hellwalker's single pellet gets the full crit multiplier and FL4K's Megavore means even shots outside Fade Away have a chance to crit, with a good anoint and some Guardian Rank crit bonuses every shot is deleting whatever it hits and honestly it's the cleanest gameplay in BL4. Moze and the Flakker are meant for each other because her Demolition Woman tree gives splash damage Short Fuse gives secondary explosions and Means of Destruction gives ammo regen on splash, ngl, the Flakker creates so many explosions that your ammo doesn't move and it's infinite and it's the most satisfying infinite ammo loop in the game imo. Zane works best with the Reflux or the Lob because his speed bonuses from Violent Momentum make kiting with the Lob's slow orbs way easier and his barrier amp makes the Reflux's chain lightning hit even harder, kinda, it's not the most obvious combo but it's surprisingly effective or whatever.

Common Mistakes That Hold You Back

Using shotguns at the wrong range is the classic mistake and I still do it sometimes tbh because the Hellwalker has a tight spread so it actually works at mid-range but the Flakker has a very specific explosion pattern and if you're too close or too far it does nothing, learn each shotgun's effective range in the firing range before taking it into real content. Second thing people farm one Face-puncher roll and think they're done but the pellet count matters a lot, honestly, a x14 Face-puncher does almost double the melee procs of a x7 and it's worth farming for a high pellet roll trust me. Third mistake is ignoring the sticky mode on Torgue shotguns because sticky projectiles do bonus damage when they detonate and if you're just firing and letting them explode normally you're leaving damage on the table, imo, stick a few on a target reload and watch the bonus damage multiplier stack. And the biggest one is shotgun builds without any survivability because you're in close range and you're gonna take hits, if your build is pure glass cannon you're spending more time in Fight For Your Life than actually shooting so invest in some health regen or lifesteal like Amara's Sustainment FL4K's Who Rescued Who Moze's Vampyr whatever it takes to stay alive at close range.

Advanced Tips For Shotgun Fanatics

Here's a tech that changed my game, the Hellwalker's fire rate is fixed and not affected by fire rate bonuses but reload speed bonuses do work so with a good reload speed artifact or class mod you can get the Hellwalker's rate of fire up significantly and more reloads means more DOOM riffs and honestly that's the real endgame. For the Face-puncher here's a weird interaction, tbh, the Groundbreaker Guardian Rank perk stores bonus damage based on melee hits and releases it on the next melee hit and the Face-puncher triggers this because it deals melee damage so you can shoot an enemy a bunch of times to store Groundbreaker damage then punch them to release it all at once and it's a boss killing combo that most people don't know about. The Flakker's explosions count as splash damage which means they trigger Moze's Means of Destruction but what's not obvious is that each individual explosion has its own proc chance and a single Flakker shot creates like 15 explosions each of which can return ammo, ngl, that's why you literally cannot run out of ammo with this setup. For the Reflux the chain lightning scales with action skill element so if you have a shock ASE anoint the chains also deal shock damage but if you have a radiation anoint the chains deal radiation and you can tailor the chain element to the content you're running. And the Lob, the orbs pierce through Zane's barrier and get amped so you stand behind your barrier fire Lob orbs through it and they hit for amped damage while you're completely safe, it's the safest boss killing setup in the game and very few people run it and they're honestly missing out.

Why Shotguns Matter in BL4

Shotguns might not seem flashy compared to some other weapon types tbh but they fill a crucial role in any balanced loadout and the key is understanding when to pull them out because Shotguns aren't for every situation but in the right scenario they outperform everything else and I've died so many times learning when to use which one literally basically Too many players stick to one weapon type the whole game and wonder why certain enemies feel like bullet sponges and honestly matching your weapon to the encounter is like half the difficulty of BL4 and it's more important than your build or your gear level imo.

Top Picks

The Hellwalker plays literal doom music when you equip it and one-shots almost everything below badass rank and it's a meme weapon that's actually meta and honestly that's the best kind of weapon basically The Conference Call's side projectiles hit enemies behind cover and the damage stacks on large targets and it's one of those guns that seems weak until you use it against a big boss and then you get it. The Butcher's ammo regen on hit means you can literally fire forever with the right build and I've held the trigger down for entire boss fights without reloading once. The Flakker is a room-clearing monster in tight spaces but useless in open areas and learning the map layouts that favor it is half the battle imo For Torgue shotguns in sticky mode the Roisen's Thorns applies both incendiary and corrosive DOTs which is amazing for armored flesh enemies and it's honestly the best all-purpose shotgun for general mobbing or whatever.

Build Synergies

The right build makes Shotguns go from good to absolutely broken and I've seen damage numbers that literally crash the game on console. For Moze look for splash damage synergies and ammo regen because she can fire Shotguns forever without reloading if built right and it's the most brainless fun you can have in BL4 imo FL4K wants crit damage and fire rate to maximize the DPS window during Fade Away and when everything lines up it's beautiful but when you miss your Fade Away window it feels terrible just being real. Zane benefits from fire rate and accuracy buffs that stack with kill skills and his speed-based playstyle works surprisingly well with close-range shotguns. Amara's elemental infusion can add an extra damage layer to any Shotguns and her melee synergy with the Face-puncher is basically a whole different game. The key is matching the Shotgun's natural strengths with your Vault Hunter's skill tree rather than forcing things that don't work together and I've wasted countless hours learning this the hard way you know honestly

Common Mistakes

The biggest mistake I see with Shotguns is using the wrong element for the encounter and BL4's Mayhem mode punishes bad element matching way harder than the base game, ngl, shock for shields incendiary for flesh corrosive for armor and it sounds basic but people still try to brute force with the wrong element and waste ammo and I've been guilty of this so many times. Second mistake is ignoring the manufacturer gimmick because a Vladof Shotgun plays completely different from a Jakobs one and if you're not using the gimmick you're leaving damage on the table and honestly the game never explains this. Third is bad positioning because Shotguns have optimal range windows and standing at the wrong distance cuts your effective DPS by more than any anoint can make up for, tbh, and with shotguns the range sweet spot is everything.

Advanced Tips

Learn the recoil pattern of your main Shotgun because every legendary has a unique recoil signature and mastering it means the difference between 60% and 95% crit accuracy and I'm telling you this is the single biggest damage upgrade you can get tbh honestly Pre-fire before peeking cover with fast-fire-rate Shotguns so the first few shots will be on target by the time you expose yourself and it's one of those things that seems obvious once you know it but nobody thinks of on their own. Keep a backup Shotgun with a different element in your second or third weapon slot because swapping is faster than reloading in most cases and this has saved my life more times than I can count. And for the love of loot test your Shotgun on the Sanctuary dummy before taking it into real content because tooltip DPS lies all the time and actual performance on a stationary target is the only truth.
