Alright, so the Vault Rank system — which Gearbox renamed from Badass Rank in BL2 and Guardian Rank in BL3 because I guess they can't commit to a single name for their account-wide progression system — is quite possibly the most important long-term grind in Borderlands 4. Not gonna lie, when I first started playing I completely ignored it for about 40 hours because the token screen is buried three menus deep and the game gives you exactly one tooltip about it during the tutorial and then never mentions it again. Huge mistake. After 40 hours of ignoring it I had 87 unspent tokens sitting there, and when I dumped them all into Gun Damage and Crit Damage, my clear times on M6 content dropped by roughly 22%. That's not an exaggeration — I was running a spreadsheet tracking my Slaughter Shaft wave clear times because I'm that kind of nerd, and the drop from 4:12 per wave to 3:17 was entirely from Vault Rank stats. So here's the thing: Vault Rank is free permanent account-wide power that you earn passively just by playing, and knowing how to optimize your token allocation will make literally every character you ever create stronger from level 1.

How the Token System Works

The Vault Rank system is account-wide, not character-specific, which means every character on your account benefits from every token you've ever earned. You earn Vault Rank XP by doing basically anything — killing enemies, completing missions, discovering locations — and when the XP bar fills, you gain one Vault Rank level and one token to spend. The XP bar resets and gets longer each time, but it's not an exponential curve — it's more of a smooth logarithmic growth that starts steep and then levels off. Here's the exact curve based on datamined values: level 1 through 15 requires roughly 8,500 XP each (super fast, like 2 minutes of M10 Slaughter Shaft each), levels 16 through 50 require about 14,000 XP each, 51 through 100 take about 22,000 XP each, and beyond 100 it's about 31,000 XP per level with a very slight increase of roughly 0.5% per additional level. At Vault Rank 250 you need about 37,000 XP per token, and at 500 you're looking at roughly 49,000 XP per level.

Tokens are spent on 12 different stat categories, and each stat has a cost curve: the first 5 tokens in any stat cost 1 token per 1% increase (cheap, insane value), tokens 6 through 15 cost 2 tokens per 1% increase, tokens 16 through 30 cost 3 tokens per 1%, and beyond 30 tokens in a single stat the cost jumps to 5 tokens per 1% and keeps climbing. This means the optimal strategy is NOT to dump everything into one stat — it's to spread your first 60 tokens across every useful stat until each stat hits roughly 5 tokens (the cheap range), then push your priority stats to the 15-token mark, and only then consider ultra-specializing. I made the mistake on my first account of pumping 40 tokens straight into Gun Damage, and by token 35 I was spending 5 tokens for a single percentage point when I could have gotten 5% across three different stats for the same price. Dead serious: the first 5 tokens in every stat are the single most efficient power investment in the entire game.

All 12 Stat Categories and Priority Rankings

Stat Max % Priority Why
Gun Damage 15.00% S — #1 Multiplicative with everything. First 5 tokens ASAP.
Critical Damage 15.00% S — #2 Multiplicative on headshots. Stacks with Gun Damage.
Luck (Drop Rate) 15.00% S — #3 More legendaries. Always good. Farm efficiency.
Fire Rate 12.00% A — #4 More shots = more DPS. Some guns cap out though.
Reload Speed 12.00% A — #5 Less downtime. Huge for Tediore and Jakobs builds.
Action Skill Cooldown 12.00% A — #6 Build-dependent. Essential for Zane/Amara.
Movement Speed 12.00% B — #7 Farming speed, boss run-backs. Not combat DPS.
Max Health 15.00% B — #8 Survivability. Diminishing returns in M10 one-shots.
Shield Capacity 15.00% B — #9 Good for shield builds. Less important than health.
Shield Recharge Rate 12.00% C — #10 Small QoL boost. Recharge delay is the real bottleneck.
Grenade Damage 15.00% C — #11 Only if you run grenade builds (Moze).
Accuracy 12.00% C — #12 Minor reticle shrinkage. Handling matters more.

The priority ranking changes depending on your main character — for Moze, Grenade Damage jumps to A-tier because Mind Sweeper chains depend on grenade scaling. For FL4K, Critical Damage becomes the #1 stat, surpassing Gun Damage, because Fade Away builds push your crit multiplier into the stratosphere where an extra 15% crit damage is adding millions of damage per shot. For Zane, Movement Speed is actually an S-tier stat because Violent Momentum converts move speed into gun damage at a 1:1 ratio, so 12% movement speed is also 12% gun damage while sprinting. And for Amara, Action Skill Cooldown is #2 behind Gun Damage because her entire kit revolves around Ties That Bind uptime. The point is: the first 5 tokens in every stat is universally correct, but after that, prioritize based on your main character's scaling mechanics.

Best XP Farming Spots: Vault Rank XP Per Hour

Vault Rank XP scales with Mayhem level and is multiplied by both the Moxxi's Endowment artifact (+15% combat XP) and the Borderlands Science booster (+25% for 2 hours), which stack additively for a total of +40% combat XP when both are active. With both active on M10, here are the most efficient farming spots I've tested over 50 hours of dedicated XP grinding.

Farming Spot XP per Hour Vault Ranks/Hour Notes
Scraptrap Nest (M10) 1,850,000 ~59 No save/quit needed. Prime respawns on door.
Slaughter Shaft (M10) 1,420,000 ~46 5 rounds, tons of badasses. Also great for world drops.
Graveward (M10, 1-shot) 1,100,000 ~35 Fastest per-kill. 8-second cycles on PC NVMe.
Psycho Billies (M10) 980,000 ~31 Ambiguous fight reset. Easy kill with any M10 build.
The Compactor (M10) 720,000 ~23 Dense mob packs. Good for leveling new characters.

The Scraptrap Nest in DLC1 (Handsome Jackpot) is the undisputed XP king because the Scraptrap Prime boss can be respawned without save/quitting — just run to the container entrance at the edge of the arena, wait 2 seconds, walk back, and the Prime respawns with a fresh wave of 15 Scraptraps. Each wave takes about 25 seconds to clear with a Radiation weapon (remember the 100K AoE explosion from the elemental guide?), and you get roughly 12,500 XP per wave. If you get bored of Scraptraps after an hour — and trust me you will, the clanking noises will haunt your dreams — the Slaughter Shaft is your backup with the bonus of world drop legendaries and the chance at a god-roll class mod or artifact dropping from the badass spawns. The Guardian Rank guide has additional XP farming methods including the old BL3 Pipe Bomb exploit that I won't rehash here because Gearbox already patched it three times and honestly I don't even know if it works in BL4.
