Look I've spent hundreds of hours farming in Borderlands 4 and I've learned that not all farming spots are created equal, some areas are genuinely terrible for loot even though they look promising while others are absolute goldmines that I keep going back to even after I have everything I need, this guide covers the best general farming spots that aren't tied to specific bosses — think of these as your go-to zones when you just need to fill up on loot, cash, and XP without fighting the same boss for the hundredth time
Slaughter Shaft — The Complete Package
Located in The Splinterlands on Pandora the Slaughter Shaft is the single best all-around farming location in Borderlands 4 and it's not particularly close, it gives you excellent XP decent cash constant legendary drops and a massive volume of enemies in a confined arena, the downside is that you have to survive all 5 rounds to get the best rewards and the Mayhem 11 version can be brutal if your build isn't ready
The key to farming the Slaughter Shaft efficiently is using a good mobbing build with area damage, Moze with a splash damage build and Flipper SMG can clear the entire arena from the elevated center platform, FL4K with a Gamma Burst build and a good pet can let the pet tank while you pick off enemies from range, and Amara with a Ties That Bind / Remnant chain build can clear waves faster than any other character by spreading damage across the entire room
If you're using the Slaughter Shaft for XP specifically the best strategy is to clear round 5 and then intentionally not pick up the reward until you've killed every last enemy on the map, because enemies keep spawning until you grab the quest item and they all give XP, you can milk an extra 20-30 kills per round this way which adds up fast over multiple runs
The Droughts Early Game Spot
For early to mid-game farming (levels 1-35) the Droughts on Pandora is actually a hidden gem that most players overlook because they rush through it on their first playthrough, there's a specific area near the Billies and the vending machine where three Badass enemies spawn within 30 seconds of each other, each Badass drops 1-3 items and gives excellent XP, and the vending machine is right there for selling and refilling
The route is: fast travel to The Droughts, run north toward the billboards where you'll find a group of bandits including one Badass, kill them run east to the next camp with another Badass and some regular enemies, then run back to the fast travel point and reset, this 2-minute loop gives about 5-8 items and a quarter level at lower levels, it's not the fastest farm in the game but it's available from minute one and doesn't require any story progression unlike the Slaughter Shaft
Athenas Cathedral Mid-Game Loop
Farming Traunt on Athenas is one of the most popular mid-game farms and for good reason — the loop is incredibly efficient, you fast travel to the Cathedral of the Twin Gods spawn right in front of Traunt's arena kill him in 10-20 seconds pick up all the loot and then he respawns by save-quit / continue, the travel time from spawn to boss is literally zero seconds because he's right there
Besides the cash and XP from killing Traunt there are also two red chests in the cathedral area that spawn loot every time you reload, one is behind the altar and one is up on the balcony to the left of the boss arena, grabbing these chests adds maybe 10 seconds to your run and gives you extra legendaries and purples to sell, it's a small optimization but over 50 runs those extra chests add up to a lot of sellable loot
Konrad's Hold — Mob Density Heaven
Konrad's Hold on Pandora has the highest enemy density of any non-arena area in the game and it's massively underrated as a general farming location, the entire map is basically a straight corridor from the fast travel point to the end with dozens of Maliwan soldiers Militants and dogs packed into tight spaces, with a good mobbing build you can clear the entire map in 10-15 minutes and come out with 30+ items
The best approach is to run the map from the fast travel point all the way to the bridge where you fought the first boss, don't bother going past the bridge because the density drops off significantly after that, focus on the main corridor and the two side rooms with red chests, the red chests in Konrad's Hold have a decent chance of dropping legendaries and they respawn every time you reload the area
One specific spot worth noting is the room just before the bridge where a Badass and several regular Maliwan soldiers spawn continuously for about 60 seconds, if you hang back and kill them as they come you can get 15-20 kills without moving from one spot, this is great for XP farming on Moze with a Bottomless Mags build because you never need to reload
Cistern of Slaughter — Underrated Alternative
While the Slaughter Shaft gets all the attention the Cistern of Slaughter on Promethea is actually a better farming spot in some ways, the enemy types are mostly Maliwan and COV which are easier to kill than the Anointed enemies in the Slaughter Shaft, the arena is smaller so you can kill faster and the round structure is more forgiving with fewer Badass waves
The Cistern's main advantage is that the final reward at round 5 often includes a guaranteed legendary in addition to the random drops, this makes it slightly better for pure loot farming compared to the Slaughter Shaft where the final reward is more XP-focused, if you're specifically farming for world-drop legendaries to fill out your collection run the Cistern instead of the Shaft
Voracious Canopy — The Red Chest Run
If you don't feel like fighting at all and just want to open chests for loot the Voracious Canopy on Eden-6 has the highest concentration of red chests of any area in the game, there are 6 red chests within a 3-minute run from the fast travel point, each one has a decent chance at legendaries and always gives at least purple gear
The route is specific: spawn at the Voracious Canopy fast travel, run straight to the first chest behind the tree, drop down to the cave for chests 2 and 3, exit the cave and jump across the water to chest 4 on the ledge, run through the tunnel to chest 5 in the bandit camp, and chest 6 is behind the waterfall at the end of the area, hit all 6 then save-quit and reload, this takes about 3 minutes per run and gives you 6 guaranteed purples+ per run which is roughly 18 legendaries per hour at average RNG
The Anvil — Gearbox Chest God Roll Hunt
The Anvil on Eden-6 has a unique chest called the Gearbox Chest that has a higher-than-normal legendary drop rate compared to other red chests in the game, it's located in a locked room that requires the Anvil key to open but once you've opened it once the chest respawns on every reload making it a fast farm for world drops
The Gearbox Chest seems to have a hidden modifier that gives it about a 20-25% legendary drop rate compared to the standard 8-10% for regular red chests, if you're hunting for specific world-drop legendaries like the One Shotter Shield or the Pearl of Ineffable Knowledge this is one of the best places to farm because the run is fast and the chest has better odds
Honestly the best general farming spot depends on what you need at the moment: Slaughter Shaft for XP and general loot, Cistern of Slaughter for pure loot, Konrad's Hold for cash and sellables, Voracious Canopy for quick chest runs when you don't want to fight, and the Anvil Gearbox Chest for specific world-drop hunts, rotate between these depending on your mood and you'll never get bored of farming, check out our boss-specific farming guide if you're looking for dedicated drop locations for specific legendaries
