Honestly picking your first Vault Hunter in Borderlands 4 is one of those decisions that feels huge when you're staring at the character select screen but let me tell you right now it's not as deep as you think, every single one of the four Vault Hunters can beat the entire game on any difficulty and anyone who tells you different is just being a gatekeeper about their main, that said there IS a right answer for different types of players depending on whether you want easy mode through the campaign zero risk of dying or maximum damage output, I have played all four through the entire campaign on multiple playthroughs and here is my honest breakdown of which class you should pick first

Quick Verdict: Who Should You Pick?

If you're a brand new Borderlands player:

Pick Moze. She is literally the easiest character to play well because Iron Bear / Iron Cub gives you a panic button that deletes everything in the room when you start taking damage. You don't need to aim well. You don't need to manage cooldowns. You just hold trigger and win.

If you're a returning Borderlands vet:

Pick Zane or Amara depending on whether you prefer gunplay or action skills. Zane has the highest skill ceiling with his clone/drone/sentinel loadouts and is the best "gun character" in the game. Amara is the best action skill character with insane elemental damage and crowd control.

If you want to solo everything including story bosses:

FL4K. The pet tanking makes solo bossing almost trivial because the boss is often attacking your pet instead of you, and the crit damage is bonkers.

Moze — The Beginner's Best Friend

Moze has been the most popular starting Vault Hunter among new players since Borderlands 3 and honestly that popularity is completely deserved, her entire design philosophy is "what if we made a character that is good at everything and bad at nothing" and Gearbox nailed it, her action skill Iron Bear is a mech suit that gives you a second health bar and two weapons that can be customized with different hardpoints, when you upgrade to Iron Cub later in the skill tree you get a permanent AI companion that fights alongside you without needing to be summoned which is basically having a fifth party member

The best thing about Moze for a first playthrough is that her skill trees forgive basically every mistake you can make, if you run into a room full of badasses and start taking too much damage you just press your action skill button and suddenly you're in a 10-foot-tall mech with miniguns and grenade launchers deleting everything while your actual health bar doesn't even matter, the Bottomless Mags tree lets you shoot forever without reloading which is huge for new players who might not be hitting all their crits and the Demolition Woman tree gives you so much area damage that you can clear rooms by shooting vaguely in the general direction of enemies

The downside is that Moze can build some bad habits if you play her too long, you'll start thinking you're good at the game when really Iron Bear is just carrying you, and if you switch to another character later you'll wonder why you're dying to enemies that Moze would have flattened without breaking a sweat, check our Moze splash damage build guide for the full skill tree breakdown

Zane — The Skill Ceiling King

Zane is the Vault Hunter for people who like options, I mean the guy has a SNTNL drone a Digi-Clone and a Barrier shield as his action skills and depending on how you build him he can be a sniper a tank a speed demon or all three at once, the thing that makes Zane interesting is his action slot mechanic where you can equip two action skills instead of one if you give up your grenade slot which is honestly a fair trade because grenades in BL4 are mostly for anointments anyway

For a starting playthrough Zane is a bit more demanding than Moze because you actually have to position yourself well and manage your skills, the drone does solid damage but it's not going to carry you through rooms like Iron Bear will, where Zane shines is once you get some good gear and start stacking his kill skills, the Seeing Red capstone lets you activate all your kill skills just by using your action skill and at that point Zane becomes an absolute monster of consistent damage, he also has the best movement speed in the game with Violent Momentum which makes you deal more damage the faster you're moving so you're just zipping around the map at mach speed gunning down everything

If you pick Zane first just know that the early game is a bit rough because his damage really comes online once you have a proper build with synergies, before that he feels like a wet noodle compared to Moze or FL4K, but once you hit your stride around level 30-40 Zane becomes arguably the strongest Vault Hunter in the game, check our Zane speed build guide for the details

Amara — The Elemental Brawler

Amara is the Siren and if you've played any Borderlands game before you know that Sirens are always overpowered in every game they appear in, I mean Lilith in BL1 Maya in BL2 Amara in BL3 the pattern is obvious, Amara's whole thing is elemental damage and melee, she can Phasegrasp enemies to hold them in place she can Phasecast a giant astral projection of herself through walls and she can phaseslam the ground to create elemental novas

For a first playthrough Amara is arguably the most fun character because her action skills are so visually satisfying, watching a Phasecast slice through an entire hallway of bandits and seeing all their health bars evaporate is pure dopamine, she also has incredible sustain with skills that heal her for elemental damage dealt which means if you're dealing fire damage you're basically healing while burning everything to death

The downside with Amara is that she really wants specific elements and gear to reach her full potential, if you're just running around with a random kinetic gun and no element synergy you're missing about 60% of her power budget, she also struggles a bit against enemies that resist elemental damage which is rare but annoying when it happens, check our Amara elemental build guide for the full skill tree walkthrough

FL4K — The Solo Specialist

FL4K the beastmaster is the best solo character in Borderlands 4 and it's not particularly close honestly, the reason is simple: FL4K has a pet that fights for them and draws aggro which means in solo play you have a built-in distraction that lets you line up crits without getting shot in the face, the pet can also be specced to deal significant damage or provide healing and support depending on which tree you go down

FL4K's action skills are the Gamma Burst which sends your pet into a rage mode and makes it deal massive damage the Fade Away which turns you invisible and guarantees crits on your first few shots and the Rakk Attack which summons flying rakks that divebomb enemies, Fade Away is probably the best of these for a first playthrough because it's basically a "get out of death free" card combined with a massive damage boost

The best part about FL4K for a new player is that the pet system means you have a companion from level 1, you never feel alone and the pet picks up kills while you're reloading which smooths out the early game where your guns are weak, FL4K's main weakness is that they don't have great area damage options, you're mostly a single-target crit machine so mobs of weak enemies can be annoying to deal with, check our FL4K crit build guide for the full build

Final Ranking for First Playthrough

RankVault HunterBest ForDifficulty
1MozeEasiest playthrough, Iron Bear carries hardEasy
2FL4KSolo players, pet tanks damageMedium
3AmaraElemental fun, flashy action skillsMedium
4ZaneGunplay experts, high skill ceilingHard
Bottom line: There is no wrong first pick in Borderlands 4. Every Vault Hunter is viable through the entire game. If you're torn, Moze is the safest bet because Iron Bear gives you a massive crutch for tough fights. If you want a challenge, pick Zane. If you want a friend, pick FL4K. If you want to watch the world burn with purple fire, pick Amara.

Honestly the real answer is that you'll probably end up playing all four eventually anyway because Borderlands has always been about replayability and each Vault Hunter feels like a completely different game, I have over 200 hours on my Moze save and another 150 on Zane and they play so differently that it barely feels like the same game sometimes, so don't stress about getting it wrong because you literally can't, just pick whoever looks coolest to you and go have fun, that is after all the entire point of playing a video game
