Honestly Circles of Slaughter in Borderlands 4 are the best way to test your build's mobbing capability because nothing exposes weak links in your gear and skill choices like 5 rounds of increasingly chaotic enemy waves, unlike boss farming where you can optimize for a single target, Circles of Slaughter require you to handle everything — shielded enemies armored enemies flying enemies badasses and multiple bosses all at once with no downtime to breathe, I've cleared all three Circles of Slaughter on Mayhem 11 with each Vault Hunter and here's the complete breakdown of each arena and how to dominate them

What Are Circles of Slaughter

Circles of Slaughter are wave-based arena combat challenges available on three different planets, each one has 5 rounds of escalating difficulty with a boss wave on round 5, the enemies get tougher with each round and the final round always includes one or more named boss-level enemies, completing all 5 rounds grants a reward chest that scales to your current Mayhem level

The three Circles are: the Slaughter Shaft on Pandora (COV enemies), the Cistern of Slaughter on Promethea (Maliwan enemies), and the Slaughterhouse on Nekrotafeyo (Guardian enemies), each has different enemy types arena layouts and environmental hazards that require different strategies

Slaughter Shaft — Pandora

The Slaughter Shaft is the most popular Circle of Slaughter and for good reason — it's the best XP farm in the game and its loot pool is entirely world drops which means any legendary can drop here, the arena is a multi-level circular pit in The Splinterlands where you fight waves of COV bandits and creatures, the lower levels of the pit have radioactive pools that deal damage if you stand in them but they also kill enemies faster if you knock them in

Slaughter Sharf Round Breakdown

Round 1: Basic bandits and psycho enemies. Easy warm-up. Round 2: Introduces badass enemies and the first badass wave. Round 3: Tink-heavy waves with a Tink boss at the end. Round 4: Badasses and loaders, heavy armored enemy presence. Round 5 (Final): Two named bosses — one COV heavy and one tink. Both have badass-tier health pools and deal significant damage.

The Slaughter Shaft is the easiest of the three Circles because the COV enemies don't have shields and they're susceptible to fire damage, if you bring a good fire-element weapon you'll shred through rounds 1-4 and only struggle on round 5 where the bosses have armor health bars, a corrosive backup weapon for the final round is essential

The best strategy is to stay on the upper ring of the arena and shoot down into the pit rather than jumping into the radioactive zone, enemies that fall into the radioactive water will take damage over time and die faster, the upper ring also gives you a height advantage that makes it harder for enemies to hit you while you line up headshots

Cistern of Slaughter — Promethea

The Cistern of Slaughter is located in a Maliwan facility on Promethea and it's the hardest of the three Circles because Maliwan enemies have shields elemental weapons and coordinated attack patterns, the arena is a large concrete bunker with raised platforms and cover points that you need to use strategically because standing in the open against Maliwan snipers will get you melted in seconds

Cistern of Slaughter Round Breakdown

Round 1: Basic Maliwan troopers, mostly shock and fire variants. Round 2: Introduces Maliwan heavies with deployable shielding. Round 3: Jetpack troopers and snipers on the catwalks above. Round 4: Heavy infantry wave with multiple badass commanders. Round 5 (Final): Two Maliwan Valkyrie soldiers (similar to the ones in the Maliwan Takedown but weaker).

The Cistern requires a shock weapon to strip shields efficiently because Maliwan enemies have dense shields that make them bullet sponges if you only use elemental damage, a shock Flipper or shock Plasma Coil is ideal for this arena, you also need good cover management because the Maliwan snipers on the catwalks can two-shot you on Mayhem 11

The key strategy for the Cistern is to clear the catwalks of snipers first before engaging the ground enemies, use a sniper or a long-range assault rifle to pick off the catwalk enemies from the entrance before you drop into the arena proper, once the snipers are gone you can fight the ground enemies using the concrete barriers for cover, prioritize the heavies with shields because they can revive other enemies if you don't kill them first

Slaughterhouse — Nekrotafeyo

The Slaughterhouse is a Guardian-themed arena on Nekrotafeyo and it's arguably the strangest Circle because Guardian enemies have unique behaviors that you don't see anywhere else in the game, the arena is a massive Eridian structure with floating platforms and teleport pads that connect different sections, enemies spawn from glowing portals and some of them can teleport behind you which is incredibly disorienting

Slaughterhouse Round Breakdown

Round 1: Basic Guardian soldiers and small floating Guardians. Round 2: Guardian heavies with large shields that block frontal damage. Round 3: Guardian engineers that deploy healing stations — kill these first. Round 4: Multiple Guardian badasses with elemental attacks. Round 5 (Final): Two massive Guardian construct bosses that must be killed within close timing or they revive each other.

The Slaughterhouse is the most gear-dependent Circle because Guardian enemies resist elemental damage unless you're using the correct element for their specific health type, the Guardians in this arena have a mix of shields, armor, and flesh health bars so you need a weapon loadout that covers all three elements, a good loadout for this arena is shock (for shields) + corrosive (for armor) + fire (for flesh) and you'll need to rotate between them based on what you're fighting

The teleporting enemies in the Slaughterhouse are the biggest threat because they can appear right behind you while you're shooting at something in front of you, the strategy is to keep moving constantly and never stand still to line up shots, use splash damage weapons that don't require precise aiming so you don't get caught off guard while ADSing, Moze with a splash build and a Flipper is probably the best Vault Hunter for this arena because you can spray and pray while running in circles

General Strategy for All Circles

Regardless of which Circle you're running there are some universal strategies that apply to all of them, first: always save your action skill for badass waves and boss rounds, don't waste it on the early trash mobs because you'll need it when the real threats appear, second: bring a Transformer shield to any arena with Maliwan enemies (so the Cistern) because the shock damage from Maliwan weapons will recharge your shield instead of damaging you

Third: use the arena layout to your advantage, each arena has high ground or cover points that can give you a tactical advantage, don't just stand in the middle of the arena and trade shots with enemies, Fourth: bring a loot-splosion Mayhem modifier if you're farming the Circles for loot because the high enemy density means more loot-splosion procs and more total legendaries per run

Build Recommendations for Each Circle

For the Slaughter Shaft use Moze splash build with a fire Flipper and corrosive backup, the high enemy density plays into Moze's splash synergy perfectly and Iron Bear gives you a panic button for the final boss wave. For the Cistern of Slaughter use Amara elemental build with a shock Free Radical and a corrosive Flipper, Amara's elemental sustain keeps you alive through the Maliwan elemental damage and the shock chain damage clears the shielded enemies faster than any other character

For the Slaughterhouse use FL4K with a pet build and Gamma Burst, the pet provides a distraction for the teleporting Guardians and the Gamma Burst invincibility lets you survive the Guardian bosses' most dangerous attacks, plus FL4K's single-target damage is unmatched for melting the Guardian bosses in round 5

Honestly the Circles of Slaughter are the best content in the game for testing your build's overall strength because they demand everything from you — damage, survivability, positioning, and resource management all at once, if you can clear all three Circles on Mayhem 11 without going down your build is ready for anything the game can throw at you including Takedowns
