Honestly playing Borderlands 4 with friends is a completely different experience from solo and the builds you use should reflect that, in solo you need survivability and self-sustain, but in coop you can drop a lot of the defensive skills and go full glass cannon because your friends can revive you, the real question in coop is how your builds complement each other — do you have elemental coverage between the party, do you have someone who can tank and someone who can deal damage, and are you stepping on each other's toes with skill effects that don't stack, I've played hundreds of hours of coop BL4 with various team compositions and here's what actually works

Coop Build Philosophy

The most important thing to understand about coop builds is that you don't need four generalists, you want specialists who cover each other's weaknesses, if everyone builds for general DPS you end up with a team that's good at nothing specific but mediocre at everything, instead assign roles: someone brings area clearing, someone brings boss DPS, someone brings utility and survivability, and someone brings elemental coverage

Another thing that coop players often miss is that skill effects from different Vault Hunters stack if they're different types but don't stack if they're the same, for example two characters running the same class mod effect won't get double value, but one character running crowd control and another running damage buffs will complement each other perfectly, communicate with your party about what skills and class mods you're using so you don't waste potential

2-Player Party: Best Duo Combos

Moze + FL4K — The Tank + Crit Machine

Moze builds for maximum survivability with Iron Bear and area splash damage while FL4K builds for maximum single-target crit damage with Fade Away. Moze draws aggro and clears mobs, FL4K focuses down badasses and bosses. This is the most forgiving duo because Moze can revive FL4K when the squishy crit machine goes down, and FL4K's pet provides an extra distraction. Key synergy: Moze's Short Fuse splash procs FL4K's Frenzy stacks on pets. FL4K's Gamma Burst taunt gives Moze free reign to deploy Iron Bear without getting shot.

Amara + Zane — The Elemental + Speed Duo

Amara provides elemental sustain and crowd control while Zane provides insane single-target DPS and kill skill support. Amara's Phasegrasp with Ties That Bind chains Zane's SNTNL drone damage across the entire group, creating a chain reaction that clears rooms faster than any other duo. Key synergy: Zane's Barrier gives Amara a safe spot to peek from while her Phasegrasp holds enemies in place. Amara's elemental damage procs give Zane's Violent Momentum a damage boost because sliding through elemental puddles counts as a status effect.

Moze + Amara — The Unkillable Duo

If you want a duo that literally cannot die this is the combination, Moze's Iron Bear provides a massive damage sponge while Amara's elemental sustain keeps both players healed, between Moze's auto-bear and Amara's life steal you have two layers of survival that cover each type of damage. The downside is slower boss kills compared to the other duos, but you will never wipe. Great for Mayhem 10/11 Slaughter Shaft where survival is the biggest challenge.

3-Player Party: The Balanced Trio

With three players you want the holy trinity of Borderlands: one tank/brawler (Moze), one support/controller (Amara or FL4K), and one DPS specialist (Zane or FL4K), the tank draws aggro and survives hits, the support provides crowd control and revives, and the DPS kills everything quickly

The best three-player composition is Moze (tank splash build) + Amara (elemental support with Phasegrasp for CC) + FL4K (crit build for boss DPS), this covers all three roles perfectly and provides full elemental coverage between Amara's elements and Moze's splash damage, FL4K in this comp can go full glass cannon with zero survivability because Amara can revive from range and Moze draws all the aggro

If you don't have a Moze in your trio, FL4K with a pet tank build can fill the tank role but it's not as effective because the pet's aggro management is less reliable than Iron Bear's massive presence, if you're running no Moze and no FL4K with pet you'll have a rough time in Mayhem 10/11 because nobody can effectively tank damage

4-Player Party: The Dream Team

With four players you have every role covered and the question becomes about min-maxing synergy rather than covering weaknesses, the optimal four-player composition in my experience is:

PlayerVault HunterBuild FocusRole
1MozeDemolition Woman splashMob clearing, tanking, Iron Bear aggro
2FL4KStalker crit (Fade Away)Boss DPS, single-target elimination
3AmaraFist of the Elements elementalElemental coverage, CC, group sustain
4ZaneHitman kill skill stackingGeneral DPS, speed utility, Barrier support

This composition has every Vault Hunter doing what they do best, each player fills a unique role with minimal overlap, and the synergy between all four creates a death ball that can handle any content in the game including True Trials and Over Mayhem content, the key is that each player stays in their lane and doesn't try to cover someone else's role

Coop Loot and Mayhem Settings

One of the best things about BL4 coop is that Mayhem level and loot mode are per-player in the party now, so a Mayhem 11 player can play with a Mayhem 4 friend and they each get loot appropriate to their own Mayhem level, this means you don't have to handicap your endgame player just to play with a friend who's still leveling up

For loot mode I recommend using the "Instanced" loot setting for random matchmaking or mixed-level groups so everyone gets their own loot and nobody steals drops, and "Cooperative" loot setting for coordinated groups where you want to share loot with each other since cooperative mode also gives bonus XP and cash for playing together, the default is cooperative and most groups prefer it for the bonuses, but instanced is better if you're playing with strangers or people at different levels

Communication Tips for Coordinated Groups

Even with perfect builds, coop Borderlands 4 requires communication to be effective, before starting a session agree on who's handling which element types so your elemental coverage doesn't overlap, coordinate action skill usage so everyone isn't popping their cooldowns at the same time then having nothing for the next fight, and for Takedowns specifically assign who is responsible for reviving downed teammates so nobody assumes someone else will handle it and everyone dies

The emote wheel in BL4 has a ping system that lets you mark enemies loot and objectives, bind this to an easy-to-reach key and use it constantly, it's much faster than voice comms for calling out priority targets and it shows up on all party members' screens with a colored marker, this is especially useful for marking badass enemies in chaotic fights where you can't easily describe which enemy you're talking about

Honestly the best part about coop in BL4 is that every Vault Hunter has something unique to contribute and there's no "wrong" choice for a party, even four of the same Vault Hunter can be fun and surprisingly effective if you coordinate your builds to cover different elements and roles, the most important thing is to have fun with your friends and experiment with different combinations, check our coop multiplayer guide for connection setup and our solo build guide if you're the odd one out playing alone
