The Unkillable Pet — How Red Fang Breaks the Game
So here's the thing about FL4K that nobody tells you when you pick the character — FL4K has the worst survivability in the game, straight up. Every other Vault Hunter has a health gate mechanic or life steal, and FL4K just has... a health bar that gets deleted in 0.3 seconds on Mayhem 10+ if anything looks at you. I respecced 47 times, no exaggeration, trying to make a Fade Away build that didn't die every 30 seconds in the Slaughter Shaft, and honestly the Gamma Burst + Red Fang setup is the only thing that turned FL4K from "glass cannon that shatters if someone sneezes" into "I literally cannot die because my pet has aggro on 47 enemies and has 580% bonus health."
The Red Fang class mod reads: "While Gamma Burst is active, your pet taunts all enemies." That sounds simple. It's not simple — it's the single most powerful survivability tool in the entire game because the taunt has infinite range, no cooldown beyond Gamma Burst's duration, and the pet's health scaling at Mayhem 10+ means a Spiderant Scorcher with 5 points in Barbaric Yawp and Pack Tactics has roughly 1.2 million HP with 3% HP regen per second. Enemies at Mayhem 10+ deal about 180K DPS to pets, so your pet is facetanking 180K DPS out of a 1.2 million HP pool while regenerating 36K HP per second — it takes roughly 9 seconds of uninterrupted fire from an entire room of enemies to kill your pet, and Gamma Burst only lasts 20 seconds, and by second 12 everything is dead anyway because you've been free-firing the entire time with zero incoming damage. I mean, dead serious, I've gone entire Takedown runs without taking a single point of health damage. The pet just stands in the middle of the arena absorbing every bullet, rocket, and laser beam while I sit in the corner on a barrel plinking crits.
Skill Tree Allocation — Master Tree Deep Dive
The Gamma Burst build goes 26 points deep into Master and 25 points into Stalker, and every point in Master is about making the pet an unkillable aggro machine while Stalker gives you the gun damage to actually kill things while the pet tanks. The exact point spread matters a lot because there are trap skills in Master that look good on paper but don't actually help the Gamma Burst rotation — I wasted 5 points in Go for the Eyes on my first build and the pet crit bonus only applies to the pet's melee attack, which the pet uses like once every 8 seconds, so it's actively useless.
Master Tree (26 points): 5/5 Ferocity (pet damage +15% — mandatory because pet damage doubles as healing via Who Rescued Who), 5/5 Persistence Hunter (action skill duration +45%, extends Gamma Burst from 20 to 29 seconds, which means 29 seconds of Red Fang taunt instead of 20), 3/3 Who Rescued Who (pet deals damage = 5% of damage dealt heals FL4K — this is your only life sustain and it works while you're in cover because the pet is always attacking taunted enemies), 5/5 Barbaric Yawp (pet bonuses doubled — the Spiderant Scorcher gives +10% elemental damage as base and 5% elemental DOT chance, so doubled becomes +20% elemental damage and 10% DOT chance, which is the equivalent of a free artifact passive), 3/3 He Bites (pet reflects 15% of damage taken back to attackers, and at Mayhem 10+ the pet is taking 180K DPS so it's reflecting 27K DPS in a radiation aura around itself — enemies literally kill themselves while attacking your pet), 5/5 Mutated Defenses (pet gains +30% max health and +25% damage resistance at max stacks, stacks on pet taking damage, fully stacked in about 2.3 seconds when the entire room is shooting the taunted pet).
Stalker Tree (25 points): 5/5 Interplanetary Stalker (hunter skill power +10% per unique enemy type, stacks to 50% with the boss + badass + add = 3-4 stacks for 30-40% general damage bonus), 5/5 Furious Attack (gun damage +13% per hit, 10-stack max for 130% — caps in 1.2 seconds with a Maggie), 3/3 Lick the Wounds (pet revives you at 30% HP, and since the pet can't die during Gamma Burst because Mutated Defenses + Pack Tactics makes it unkillable, this is a guaranteed revive every 45 seconds), 3/3 Turn Tail and Run (while standing still: damage reduction +29% and gun damage +3% per second up to 30% — and you're standing still behind cover the entire time while your pet tanks, so this is permanently active at max stacks), 5/5 The Fast and the Furryous (while above 50% HP, gun damage +25% and movement speed +15% — you're always above 50% HP because nothing is shooting at you), 3/3 Hidden Machine (enemies not targeting FL4K take +30% damage — and with Red Fang taunting everything, NOTHING is targeting FL4K, so this is a permanent 30% damage multiplier), 1/1 The Power Inside (action skill grants +50% gun damage for its duration — and Gamma Burst lasts 29 seconds).
Mandatory Gear and Pet Choice
I cannot say this loudly enough: if you don't have a Red Fang class mod, do not play this build. The entire thing falls apart without the taunt — your pet still does damage and you still have Gamma Burst's 115% radiation damage anointment, but you'll die in 4 seconds to the first badass zealot that looks at you. Farm Red Fang from the Trial of Instinct (final boss), and you want a roll with +3 Ferocity and +2 Barbaric Yawp. Passives to look for are +31% weapon damage and +45% Jakobs crit damage since you're running Maggie as your main weapon.
Pet Choice: Spiderant Scorcher — the +10% elemental damage bonus becomes +20% with Barbaric Yawp, and the Scorcher's fire breath attack deals 3,200 damage per tick at Mayhem 10+ with 5/5 Ferocity, healing you for 160 HP per tick via Who Rescued Who. The Scorcher also has the fastest attack animation of all pets (1.2 attacks per second), meaning maximum healing uptime. Second choice is the Gunslinger Jabber with a rocket launcher — the Jabber does 27% more damage than the Scorcher but attacks 38% slower, so it's a DPS vs. healing tradeoff, and for general mobbing I'd take the healing every time. If you're new to FL4K, start with the Scorcher.
Weapons: Maggie (Jakobs pistol, x6 projectiles, 500 base damage per pellet x6 = 3000 base per trigger pull, with +45% Jakobs crit damage passive from class mod each pellet crits for 28,500, full trigger pull does 171K on a crit) — this is your main weapon because the spread is tight enough to land 5 out of 6 pellets on crit spots from medium range. Monarch (Vladof AR, bipod mode x4 projectiles) for single-target boss damage where you need sustained DPS — switch to Monarch when Gamma Burst is on cooldown. Any radiation-element weapon with the 115% Gamma Burst radiation damage anointment — this is the magic anointment that makes the entire build pump damage, and you want it on at least 3 of your 4 weapon slots. Radiation damage also makes enemies irradiated, which causes them to explode on death for 45% of max HP as radiation splash, and the splash applies to other enemies creating a chain reaction. Best radiation weapons for the anointment slot: Flipper (Maliwan SMG, x9 projectiles), Redistributor (Hyperion SMG, chains 7 amped shots per kill), and a radiation Oldridian for shield stripping. Check the full legendary weapons list for exact drop locations.
Shield: Red Suit (100% radiation immunity + radiation damage aura that deals 2,100 damage/sec to enemies within 5 meters) — you're running radiation weapons and Gamma Burst radiation damage, and standing in your own radiation pools will kill you without Red Suit's immunity. Plus the radiation aura stacks with He Bites' reflected damage, so enemies near your pet take 2,100 aura + 27,000 reflected = 29,100 DPS just for existing near your pet during Gamma Burst. That's a free 580K damage to every enemy within 5 meters over 20 seconds of Gamma Burst.
Artifact: Atom Balm Otto Idol — +90% radiation aura damage and +18% HP on kill, and because your pet's radiation kills count as your kills (He Bites reflects the pet's damage as your damage for kill credit purposes), you get the Otto Idol heal on every enemy your pet kills, which is constant. Perfect passive rolls: +17% radiation damage, +43% radiation resistance, +30% action skill cooldown rate. The artifacts and relics guide has the complete passive table.
Grenade: Hex (radiation, recurring) — the Hex beam applies radiation DOT to everything it touches and each DOT tick triggers the Otto Idol heal, so you can throw a Hex into a crowd and stand there regenning 18% HP every 0.3 seconds for the duration of the beams. It's genuinely broken.
Augments, Anointments, and the Gameplay Rotation
Gamma Burst Augments: Endurance (Gamma Burst duration +10 seconds, taking it from 20 to 30 seconds, stacking with Persistence Hunter for 43.5 seconds total — yes, 43.5 seconds of Red Fang taunt) + Burst Aid (pet creates a healing nova at Gamma Burst end for 20% max HP, which is 240K HP healed to you because it's based on the pet's HP). Alternative if you want more damage: swap Burst Aid for Atomic Aroma (radiation aura during Gamma Burst, 1,700 damage/sec, multiplies with Atom Balm for 3,230 damage/sec).
Anointment Priority: Weapon — Gamma Burst active grants +115% bonus radiation damage (this applies to all damage you deal, including grenade and melee, and it adds a separate radiation damage instance that benefits from Atom Balm's +90% radiation aura damage, effectively making the anointment +218% radiation damage). Grenade — On Action Skill Start, grenade damage increased by 25% (the Hex beams count as grenade damage, so this is a free +25% multiplier on your sustain tool). Shield — On Action Skill Start, activate shield break effects (procs Red Suit's radiation pulse twice for 4,200 damage to everything near you).
Gameplay Rotation: Activate Gamma Burst on your pet's current target → pet taunts everything → throw Hex at the densest group (Hex applies radiation DOT and Otto Idol heals you on every tick) → switch to Maggie and crit everything from safety → Gamma Burst ends → pet heals via Burst Aid nova → Gamma Burst cooldown is roughly 18 seconds with max Guardian Rank cooldown reduction + Persistence Hunter action skill cooldown → wait 18 seconds behind cover → repeat. During the 18-second downtime you're not invincible — you have Turn Tail and Run's 29% damage reduction and the Otto Idol's 18% HP on kill, but you need to play cover and let your pet hold aggro naturally (pets have passive threat generation even without Red Fang, it's just 70% lower). For shield alternatives during downtime, the Stop-Gap's 5-second invulnerability covers the worst part of the cooldown window.
Mayhem Modifier Picks: Galaxy Brain (huge crit spots = easy Maggie headshots), Holy Crit (the crit penalty doesn't matter because you're always critting with Maggie's tight spread), Drone Ranger (free damage from healing drones), Healy Avenger (same, free sustain). Avoid: Rogue Lite (even with pet tank you'll die once per Takedown to a random stray rocket), Floor Is Lava (the damage pools one-shot you through Red Suit immunity because the damage type isn't radiation), Mob Mentality (linked enemies share 50% damage reduction among themselves and it takes forever to break through).
