The Maliwan Blacksite Takedown is set on Midnight's Cairn — a Maliwan warship orbiting Promethea — and I'm going to be honest with you, this is my favorite Takedown in BL4. Not because it's the hardest (it isn't, that honor goes to the Guardian Takedown), but because the pacing is perfect and the boss fights are genuinely creative. The atmosphere is worth mentioning too — the ship interior is all glowing blue Maliwan tech, holographic displays, and the constant hum of the ship's reactor in the background. You access it from Sanctuary III's navigation console once you've reached level 40 and set your Mayhem level to 6 or higher, though you need Mayhem 6+ specifically if you want the exclusive legendaries to drop. The Takedown has three combat encounters followed by two boss fights, and critically, there's a death limit: you only get 3 respawns in solo, and once you burn through those, a death sends you all the way back to the start. Trust me, that 3-death limit makes the final boss feel way more intense than it has any right to be. You'll want to bring a shock weapon and a corrosive weapon — not optional, dead serious, every enemy in here has either a shield or armor, and many have both. If you walk in with only kinetic damage, you're going to have a very long, very painful run. Check our weapons database for the best elemental options.
Encounter 1: Maliwan Docking Bay
The first encounter drops you right into a docking bay with cargo containers scattered around for cover. Three waves of Maliwan troops spawn from the bay doors — mostly infantry and Shield Troopers in wave 1, upgrading to Heavyweights in wave 2, and culminating with a Badass Trooper mini-boss in wave 3. The wave 1 troopers are straightforward but don't underestimate the Shield Troopers' buff — they give all nearby Maliwan units a blue energy shield overlay that absorbs about 30% of incoming damage. Kill them first and the rest crumble. Wave 2 introduces two Maliwan Heavyweights, and these guys have roughly 2 million HP each on M10 with massive shields and an AOE ground slam attack. Kite them around the cargo containers — the ground slam can't hit you if there's a container between you and the Heavyweight. I learned that one by getting pancaked about four times in a row before the positioning clicked.
Wave 3's Badass Trooper mini-boss is essentially a souped-up Heavyweight with an energy beam attack that sweeps across the arena. The beam is telegraphed by a blue laser sight line that appears about 1.5 seconds before the beam fires, so you have time to slide behind cover. The beam can't penetrate the cargo containers, same as the ground slam, so hug the crates and peek out between beam sweeps to unload damage. A high-damage shock weapon — something from the top tier of our weapons tier list — will strip the Badass Trooper's shield in about 3-4 mags on M10, after which corrosive takes over for the armor. Good Amara or Zane shock builds can one-phase this guy. Clear time: 3-4 minutes if you're efficient, 5-6 if you're playing cautious.
Encounter 2: Reactor Core
This is where the Takedown gets interesting and where the Maliwan aesthetic really shines. The reactor core is a massive circular room with a laser grid running across the center — the grid rotates in a clockwise pattern and deals massive shock damage if it touches you, so you need to be constantly moving. The objective is to disable four power nodes scattered around the room's perimeter while Deathspheres spawn from the reactor. Deathspheres are those floating Maliwan orbs with twin laser cannons, and on M10 each one has about 500K HP and fires tracking energy projectiles. You can't just ignore them because the projectiles are relentless — kill each Deathsphere as it spawns or they'll stack up to 5-6 at once and the screen becomes a light show of pain.
The power nodes have no HP of their own — to disable them you interact with a terminal next to each one, and the interaction takes about 4 seconds during which you're completely vulnerable. This means you need to clear the Deathspheres first, then interact, then move to the next node. The laser grid makes this a positioning puzzle — you have a window of about 8 seconds between grid passes, so disable one node per cycle. For the build recommendation here: shock+corrosive is still mandatory because Deathspheres have shields and Maliwan troopers have armor, but you also want something with fast fire rate to pop Deathspheres before they stack up. A shock-element legendary SMG like the Kyb's Worth — ironic since that's a Takedown drop — is ideal for this section. Co-op note: having one player on Deathsphere duty and one on node duty makes this encounter trivial. Solo, it's a genuine test of multitasking. Clear time: 5-7 minutes.
Encounter 3: Valkyrie Squad
And now we arrive at the first real boss fight, and the one that filters a lot of unprepared players. The Valkyrie Squad is three bosses fighting you simultaneously: Corona (shock element, fast movement, teleport strikes), Helios (fire element, ground AOE, flame pillars), and Solaris (radiation element, long-range beam attacks, damage puddles). Each Valkyrie has roughly 4-5 million HP on M10. The critical mechanic that will end your run if you don't know about it: the Shield of Retribution. When you kill one Valkyrie, the remaining two gain a permanent 50% damage buff. Kill the second, and the last survivor gets another 50% buff — meaning the final Valkyrie is dealing 100% bonus damage. The optimal kill order is Helios first (his flame pillars restrict your movement space the most), then Solaris (the radiation puddles become a nightmare when you're kiting a supercharged boss), leaving Corona last because her teleport strikes are the easiest to dodge even at 100% extra damage.
Positioning matters enormously here. Stay on the outer ring of the arena — the center has overlapping AOE coverage from all three Valkyries and you'll die in seconds. Use the arena pillars for LOS breaks against Solaris's beam, and jump right before Corona's teleport strike lands (the strike hits the ground, so airborne = immune). Helios's flame pillars have a 2-second wind-up where the ground glows orange — watch the floor, not the boss. For builds: Zane's Clone can split aggro across all three Valkyries, which is honestly the single best tool for this fight. Moze's Iron Bear can tank the combined damage and output enough splash to hit all three at once. Amara needs to be built for sustain — lifesteal on action skill is mandatory here. FL4K should use Red Fang for pet taunting to redirect aggro. Clear time: 4-6 minutes with good DPS, 7-10 if you're playing safe.
Final Boss: Wotan the Invincible
Wotan is the crown jewel of this Takedown and one of the best-designed boss fights in Borderlands 4. Four phases, each requiring a different approach, and a massive 25 million total HP pool on M10. Phase 1, Wotan has a full energy shield and spams homing missile barrages while teleporting around the arena. Shock weapons strip the shield here — no point using anything else. The missiles can be outrun if you sprint perpendicular to their trajectory, don't try to dodge roll through them, they have proximity detonation. Phase 2 is the splitting phase: Wotan's body splits into a top half and bottom half, both independently attacking. The top half floats and fires a giant energy beam that sweeps the arena — hide behind the arena walls — while the legs charge at you with melee attacks. Kill the legs first (they're faster and harder to dodge), then the top half.
Phase 3 gets genuinely chaotic: Wotan reassembles and deploys a triple shield barrier plus a floating brain that fires radiation novas. You need to destroy all three shield generators (small glowing nodes on the outer ring) before Wotan takes damage again, and while you're doing that the brain is firing novas that cover roughly 40% of the arena each time. The novas are telegraphed by the brain glowing white — time your shield generator kills between nova cycles. Phase 4 is Wotan's last stand: the shield generators are gone, the brain is destroyed, and Wotan is just the skeletal frame with about 5 million HP remaining. It charges you, attacks, and has one final desperation mechanic — a self-destruct sequence that starts at 10% HP and gives you 30 seconds to finish the kill or the entire arena explodes and you die. No pressure. Shock+corrosive throughout, with a high-burst weapon for the Phase 4 burn.
Takedown-Exclusive Loot
The Maliwan Takedown has four exclusive legendaries, and they only drop on M6+. Kyb's Worth is a Maliwan SMG that alternates between shock and corrosive — it's practically designed for this Takedown and it's also one of the best SMGs in the game for general mobbing. Moonfire is a pistol that fires explosive rounds that deal bonus damage to shields — very strong for the reactor core encounter and any Maliwan-heavy content. Tiggs' Boom is a Torgue shotgun (despite being a Maliwan Takedown drop) that fires sticky pellets that chain explosions — the more pellets you stick, the bigger the final detonation, and on a full mag dump into Wotan's crit spot the damage is genuinely absurd. Valkyrie Class Mods drop from the Valkyrie Squad with randomized character assignments — they give bonuses to elemental damage and action skill cooldown, making them competitive with the dedicated class mods from Trials.
