Honestly Proving Grounds in Borderlands 4 are the sleeper hit of the endgame content and I feel like not enough players are talking about them, they're like mini-Takedowns designed for speedrunning with time-based rewards that escalate the faster you clear them, each Proving Grounds is a short gauntlet of 4-6 encounter rooms leading to a final boss and you get bonus rewards based on how fast you complete the whole run, I've speedrun every Proving Grounds on Mayhem 11 and here's the complete breakdown with optimal routes and build recommendations

How Proving Grounds Work

There are four Proving Grounds in Borderlands 4, one on each of the main planets, each one is a self-contained dungeon area accessed from a specific location on that planet's map, once you enter a Proving Grounds you have a series of linked encounter rooms where you must defeat all enemies in the room to unlock the next door, the final room contains a named boss that drops exclusive legendary loot

The time trial aspect comes after you complete the Proving Grounds for the first time — on subsequent runs a timer starts when you enter and the rewards you get from the final chest scale with your clear time: under 15 minutes gives standard rewards, under 10 minutes gives bonus loot, under 5 minutes gives maximum rewards including a guaranteed legendary, the leaderboard tracks your best time for each Proving Grounds and the top times get displayed in the in-game community board

Precipice Anchor — Pandora

The Precipice Anchor is the easiest Proving Grounds and the one you should tackle first if you're new to the time trial system, it's located in a canyon off the Droughts map on Pandora accessible through a cave behind a waterfall, the dungeon has 4 rooms before the final boss with the first two rooms being basic bandit camps and the last two rooms introducing badass enemies and elemental variants

The optimal route for a sub-5-minute time is to skip optional side rooms that don't contain the main corridor progression path, some of the rooms have branching paths that lead to extra chests but taking them wastes time, the Precipice Anchor is also the best Proving Grounds for farming cash because the bandits drop a lot of sellable loot and the clear time is so fast that you can chain runs back to back

The final boss Berserker King is a giant COV bandit with a massive health pool and a rage mechanic that increases his damage as his health drops, the strategy is to use a corrosive weapon for his armor bar and then switch to fire for his flesh bar once the armor breaks, keep your distance because his melee attacks can one-shot on Mayhem 11

Ghostlight Beacon — Promethea

The Ghostlight Beacon is a Maliwan research facility hidden beneath the Meridian Metroplex and it's significantly harder than the Precipice Anchor because Maliwan enemies use coordinated tactics and elemental combinations, the dungeon has 6 rooms which makes it the longest Proving Grounds and the time pressure is real because you can't afford to take cover for too long in any single room

The key to a fast Ghostlight Beacon run is crowd control, don't try to kill every enemy one at a time — use area damage weapons that can hit multiple enemies at once, the Maliwan soldiers tend to cluster together in the doorways when they're spawning so throw a grenade or use a splash weapon at the spawn points to catch multiple enemies instantly, a shock weapon for shields and a corrosive weapon for the mechs' armor is essential

The final boss Maliwan Commander is a heavily armored Maliwan officer with a deployable shield generator that makes him immune to damage from the front, the strategy is to flank him while his shield is up or use splash damage that hits around the shield, his weak point is the jetpack on his back which takes bonus damage from all sources

Hallowed Grove — Eden-6

The Hallowed Grove is a jungle-themed Proving Grounds on Eden-6 that feels like a horror dungeon with its narrow pathways and ambush-heavy encounter design, the dungeon has 5 rooms and the enemies are a mix of COV bandits and Jabber creatures that can swarm you from multiple directions, the narrow corridors make AoE weapons extremely dangerous because you can hit yourself with splash damage

The Hallowed Grove is actually the hardest Proving Grounds for a sub-5-minute clear because the narrow corridors force you to engage enemies at close range and the Jabbers are extremely fast and can close the distance before you can react, the optimal build for this Proving Grounds is a high-mobility character with good close-range burst damage, Zane with a speed build and a shot gun is excellent here because you can run past the early rooms and only stop to fight the required enemies

The final boss Jabbermog is a giant mutated Jabber with a poison attack that leaves pools of acid on the ground, the fight arena has limited space so you need to keep moving constantly to avoid the acid pools, the boss's weak point is its head which is exposed after it does a charging attack, wait for the charge then punish the crit spot while it's recovering

Crypt of the Ancients — Nekrotafeyo

The Crypt of the Ancients is the most challenging Proving Grounds by a significant margin and completing it on Mayhem 11 in under 5 minutes is a genuine achievement that only a small fraction of players will ever accomplish, the dungeon has 5 rooms but the enemies are all Guardian constructs that teleport have elemental attacks and debuff your damage output if you get hit by their special attacks

A sub-5-minute Crypt run requires a fully optimized build with perfect gear and a deep understanding of the dungeon layout, you need to memorize the optimal path through each room because going the wrong direction costs you precious seconds, the Guardian enemies in this dungeon are also the tankiest of any Proving Grounds enemies so raw DPS is critical

The final boss Ancient Guardian is a massive Eridian construct with three distinct phases: phase 1 is a standard fight where it uses ranged attacks and teleports around the arena, phase 2 at 50% health it summons Guardian adds that must be killed or they heal the boss, phase 3 at 25% health the boss enrages with increased attack speed and damage, the best strategy is to save your action skill for phase 3 and burn the boss down before the enrage kills you

Best Builds for Proving Grounds Speedruns

The best overall build for Proving Grounds speedruns is Zane with a kill skill stacking build because his movement speed from Violent Speed and damage from Violent Momentum scale with his speed, allowing him to sprint through rooms while maintaining high DPS, the speed advantage alone saves 30-60 seconds per run compared to other Vault Hunters

Moze with a Bottomless Mags splash build is the second best option because she never needs to reload which means you spend more time shooting and less time standing still, Iron Bear also gives you a massive damage boost on the final boss which can save you 10-15 seconds on the boss kill, for Amara the Ties That Bind Phasegrasp build is optimal because the damage sharing kills multiple enemies at once, and for FL4K the Fade Away crit build gives you the fastest single-target boss DPS

Exclusive Rewards

Each Proving Grounds has exclusive legendary drops from its final boss that are not available anywhere else in the game: Precipice Anchor drops the Thunderstruck (Maliwan pistol that chains shock damage on crit), Ghostlight Beacon drops the Overcharge (Vladof assault rifle with increasing damage as you fire continuously), Hallowed Grove drops the Tangle (Tediore shotgun that spawns trap vines on reload), and Crypt of the Ancients drops the Eridium Reaver (Dahl SMG that converts a percentage of damage dealt into Eridium on kill)

A sub-5-minute clear on any Proving Grounds also awards an exclusive cosmetic called the "Speed Demon" weapon trinket which is a small stopwatch charm that shows your fastest clear time on the weapon model, it's one of the most prestigious cosmetic items in the game because it proves you can actually speedrun the content at the highest level

Honestly Proving Grounds are the most underrated part of BL4's endgame and getting sub-5-minute clears is some of the most satisfying content in the game because it's not about grinding RNG for drops — it's about skill, optimization, and execution, if you're looking for a new challenge after you've cleared all the Takedowns and Circles of Slaughter, Proving Grounds speedruns are the answer
