okay so Borderlands 4 has five Vault Hunters now and each one gets three skill trees plus this completely new augment system that replaces how action skill variants worked in BL3 and honestly finding the right build for Mayhem 10 and 11 is basically the difference between having fun and wanting to throw your controller at the wall tbh, I've spent way too many hours testing every combination and some stuff that looks good on paper just falls apart when a badass with triple health bars rushes you, anyway this guide covers the strongest solo Mayhem 10 and 11 builds I've found for each Vault Hunter with full skill tree allocations and gear and playstyle stuff you get the idea

1. C4SH: The Card Slinger (Strongest Overall)

Core Mechanic: C4SH fights with a deck of cards that orbit around him and each card represents a buff or debuff like Critical Hit Chance, Fire Rate, Movement Speed, Splash Radius, or Elemental Damage and honestly the card system is kind of genius because drawing cards during combat stacks these buffs and the "Full House" capstone grants all five buffs simultaneously when all five card types are in play, C4SH is universally considered the strongest Vault Hunter in BL4 for solo play because he needs zero external synergy his cards literally make any weapon viable it's kind of stupid how good he is ngl. Skill Tree Priority: Red tree (Full House) to capstone first because this is your main damage multiplier and without it you're just a guy with some cards, Blue tree (Card Counter) for increased draw speed and buff duration. Key skills: Full House (all 5 buffs active at once and it triples your damage basically), Double Down (draw two cards per activation which speeds everything up), Royal Flush (critical hits refresh card duration so you never drop buffs), Card Counter (+3 max cards). So you put 26 points in red, 20 in blue, and the rest in green for survivability which honestly you don't even need that much because everything dies so fast

Essential Gear plus Playstyle: Any high-fire-rate weapon to maximize card draw triggers so Flipper SMG, Kaoson SMG, Light Show pistol are all great picks. Class mod: Gambler's Deck (increases card duration by 40% and adds a 15% chance to draw a sixth card which is basically broken). Artifact: Pearl of Ineffable Knowledge for consecutive hit damage. Shield: Revolter with "On Action Skill Start" anointment. And for playstyle you activate card draw at the start of every fight and keep moving because each kill or critical hit draws additional cards, when Full House activates with all 5 card types in play your DPS roughly triples and you maintain uptime by getting crits every 8 seconds to refresh card duration but honestly C4SH is fragile without his cards so never engage before drawing at least 3 cards I learned that the hard way like three times before it stuck

2. Vex: The Elemental Siren

Core Mechanic: Vex is a Siren with phase-energy abilities that apply elemental damage over time and her unique mechanic is "Elemental Overload" where applying elemental damage to enemies charges a meter and at full charge the next action skill cast triggers a massive elemental explosion with radius 12 meters and damage 180,000 at Mayhem 10 which is absolutely insane for mobbing but tbh she struggles against single-target bosses without proper gear and I almost gave up on her before I got the right artifact. Skill Tree Priority: Green tree (Elemental Overflow) for maximum elemental damage and status effect chance, Blue tree (Phase Cascade) for cooldown reduction and ability spam. Key skills: Conflux (apply a second random element with every hit which is so good), Sustainment (14% elemental lifesteal that keeps you alive), Wildfire (status effects spread to nearby enemies), Elemental Overflow capstone (200% increased elemental damage for 12 seconds after Elemental Overload explosion and it's honestly disgusting how much damage this adds)

Essential Gear plus Playstyle: Plasma Coil SMG or Flipper SMG for multi-element application. Class mod: Elementalist (status effect damage up 60%, duration up 40%). Artifact: Elemental Projector (183% elemental damage when suffering matching status effect and this artifact is literally what makes Vex go from C-tier to S-tier I'm not kidding). Shield: Transformer (absorb shock damage, Vex's self-elemental-applying skills can trigger this for infinite shields it's kind of a cheese but it works). Grenade: Hunter-Seeker (tracks enemies and applies random element). So you shoot enemies to stack elements and build the Elemental Overload meter then once it's full you cast your phase ability to explode everything in a 12-meter radius, against bosses the strategy changes you stack Conflux for double elements then maintain sustained fire and honestly Vex cannot one-phase most raid bosses like C4SH can but she clears mobs faster than any other Vault Hunter it's not even close

3. Rafa: The Soldier (Best for Beginners)

Core Mechanic: Rafa deploys automated turrets, drones, and shield pylons and his "Battlefield Control" mechanic gives reduced cooldowns for every ally including deployables in combat so the more stuff you have out the faster everything comes back, Rafa is the most straightforward Vault Hunter you point gun, shoot, deploy turret, repeat and honestly I started with Rafa expecting him to be boring but he's legitimately fun and recommended for first-time BL4 players because he forgives bad positioning and has the easiest skill tree to optimize you can basically just put points wherever and he still works fine. Skill Tree Priority: Red tree (Heavy Ordnance) to capstone for turret damage and double deploy, Blue tree (Support Network) for team buffs and pylon healing. Key skills: Double Time (deploy two turrets at once), Metal Storm (kills increase fire rate stacking 5 times), Supply Drop (turrets drop ammo and grenades which is so helpful in long fights), Heavy Ordnance capstone (turrets deal 150% bonus damage and fire rockets and it's glorious)

Essential Gear plus Playstyle: Monarch assault rifle or Breath of the Dying AR both work great. Class mod: Ranger (increases all deployable damage by 50%, duration by 30%). Artifact: Otto Idol (health regen on kill). Shield: Stop-Gap (invulnerability on shield break). Grenade: Moxxi's Bouncing Pair (healing on hit). And for playstyle you deploy turrets at chokepoints and throw the pylon near your position then shoot everything, when turrets are down your cooldowns are roughly 40% faster due to Battlefield Control and you relocate turrets when the combat shifts, in boss fights place turrets behind the boss for crossfire because Rafa's turrets scale with Mayhem level so they remain relevant at Mayhem 10 and each turret bullet deals roughly 80% of your weapon's damage which is kind of wild when you think about it honestly

4. Amon: The Phalanx Tank

Core Mechanic: Amon carries a kinetic shield that can absorb, reflect, and redirect enemy fire and his "Phalanx Mode" plants the shield into the ground creating a wide barrier that allies can shoot through, Amon has the highest survivability of any Vault Hunter he can face-tank Mayhem 10 boss mechanics that would one-shot other characters and while his DPS is lower than C4SH or Vex he literally never goes down and sometimes that's exactly what you need especially against bosses with unavoidable damage phases. Skill Tree Priority: Blue tree (Phalanx Mastery) for shield damage and reflection, Red tree (Juggernaut) for health, shield regen, and damage resistance. Key skills: Reflect (20% chance to reflect bullets back as 200% damage which is so satisfying when it procs), Shield Bash (melee attack using shield damage), Phalanx Mode capstone (plant shield, all allies behind it take 50% less damage), Unbreakable (shield break triggers invulnerability for 5 seconds and this has saved me more times than I can count)

Essential Gear plus Playstyle: Any high-damage shotgun like Hellwalker or Trevonator for close-range Phalanx play. Class mod: Bulwark (shield capacity +80%, shield regen delay -60%). Artifact: Plus Ultra (shield capacity +60%). Shield: Amon's personal shield scales with his skills no replacement needed but the +shield capacity rolls on class mods and artifacts matter more than any shield equippable by other characters. And for playstyle activate Phalanx Mode at doorways or narrow corridors and shoot through your own shield while reflecting bullets at enemies for passive damage, when shield breaks retreat behind cover for 5 seconds using the Unbreakable invulnerability window then re-engage, Amon is the only Vault Hunter who can successfully tank The Timekeeper's "Judgment Beam" mechanic you just plant shield, hold position, survive the full channel it's honestly hilarious watching that boss try to kill you and failing

5. Harlowe: The Stealth Support

Core Mechanic: Harlowe uses holographic decoys and stealth tech to confuse enemies and support allies and her "Binary Cloak" ability turns her invisible for 6 seconds during which all her attacks deal 300% bonus damage, she can also leave a decoy that draws enemy aggro and explodes for 60,000 damage on expiration, she's best in co-op but also strong solo with the right setup and honestly she's the hardest Vault Hunter to play well but the payoff is massive when you get it right. Skill Tree Priority: Purple tree (Ghost Protocol) for stealth damage and decoy duration, Green tree (Support Grid) for team buffs and healing nodes. Key skills: Binary Cloak capstone (300% bonus stealth damage which is just absurd), Decoy Cascade (decoy explosion chains to 3 additional enemies), Ghost Protocol (exiting stealth grants 40% fire rate and 30% crit damage for 10 seconds), Healing Node (deployable that heals 5% max health per second)

Essential Gear plus Playstyle: Finnity XXX-L sniper (stealth opens with a guaranteed crit, stacking fire rate) or Hellwalker shotgun (stealth guarantees all pellets crit and both are amazing honestly). Class mod: Phantom (stealth duration +3 seconds, stealth damage +50%). Artifact: Knife Drain (melee life steal, useful with Harlowe's stealth melee attack). Shield: Re-Charger (full shield restore on break, perfect for stealth repositioning). And for playstyle you enter Binary Cloak and position behind the toughest enemy then unload everything, when stealth expires the Ghost Protocol buff keeps your damage high for 10 seconds and you drop the decoy when aggro gets heavy, in co-op place Healing Nodes near teammates and Harlowe's stealth opens every fight with an advantage that no other Vault Hunter can match the 300% damage window is essentially a free "Delete this enemy" button every 18 seconds you get the idea

Key Features of BL4's Vault Hunter System

so first off each character has three skill trees red blue and green and capstones require 26 points in a single tree which means you can invest in two trees fully or spread points for hybrid builds depending on what you're going for honestly I've tried both and full investment in two trees almost always works better for Mayhem 10. Also the augment system completely replaces action skill variants so instead of picking different action skill versions like in BL3 you augment a single action skill with modifiers and each augment changes how the skill behaves like C4SH's Double Down draws two cards instead of one which is kind of a game changer honestly. And Guardian Rank returns with account-wide bonuses that persist across all Vault Hunters with max rank being 500 and you definitely want to prioritize the Damage and Shield trees first for the fastest progression I wasted like 50 points on the health tree and regretted it immediately. Also split-screen co-op scaling means each player's Mayhem level scales independently so a Mayhem 10 C4SH can play with a Mayhem 0 Rafa and enemies scale per player which is honestly brilliant for helping friends catch up. And each character has 5 loadout save slots where you can save full skill tree plus gear setups and swap freely at any Quick Change station with no respec cost for loadout swaps which saves so much time compared to manually redoing everything like in previous games etc

Testing Experience: Leveling All 5 to Mayhem 10

I started my testing by leveling all five Vault Hunters to 72 over roughly 120 hours of play and Rafa was my first pick because I expected the soldier archetype to be boring but it was not at all his turret deploy-and-forget playstyle let me focus on learning BL4's new enemy patterns and Mayhem mechanics without worrying about complex skill rotations and by the time I hit Mayhem 10 on Rafa at hour 30 I felt ready to try C4SH but C4SH's card mechanic took about 10 hours to click because early on I was drawing cards and then immediately losing the buffs since I was not chaining kills fast enough and the turning point was realizing that the Gambler's Deck class mod with a Flipper SMG lets you maintain Full House for an entire Slaughter Shaft round without dropping a single buff it was honestly like a lightbulb moment. And Vex was the hardest to gear because without the Elemental Projector artifact her damage felt flat she was a C-tier Vault Hunter until I farmed one and with it she went from struggling against Mayhem 10 badasses to wiping rooms faster than C4SH which I was not expecting at all, the Elemental Overload explosion when properly charged hits for 180,000 damage in a 12-meter radius and staggers every enemy it does not kill it's kind of stupid how good she gets with the right setup. Anyway Amon surprised me the most I expected the tank to be slow and boring but reflecting bullets back at enemies with his shield is genuinely satisfying and I stood in front of The Timekeeper's minigun phase without moving and watched one-third of his health bar disappear to reflected damage alone ngl that moment alone made all the leveling worth it. And Harlowe was the last to 72 and she remains the hardest to play well her stealth window is generous at 6 seconds but the positioning required to maximize the 300% damage bonus demands map knowledge that comes only from hours of play so if you're new she's probably not the best first pick imo

Best Use Cases

Solo Boss Farming (C4SH): C4SH's Full House buff makes any weapon viable for bossing and you use Kaoson with a 150% damage anointment enter the fight with all 5 cards active and watch the boss just melt, average time to kill Graveward is 12 seconds and honestly it barely even feels like a boss fight at that point. XP Farming (Vex): Vex's Elemental Overload combined with Conflux double-element application clears Scraptrap Nest waves in under 10 seconds and you can use this for leveling alternate characters from 35 to 72 in under 2 hours which is pretty much the fastest XP farm in the game right now. Co-Op Carry (Amon or Harlowe): Amon's Phalanx Mode protects undergeared teammates from boss attacks and Harlowe's Healing Nodes keep the team alive through sustained damage, both are best for helping friends through Mayhem levels they cannot solo yet and honestly Amon is probably the better carry because he just doesn't die

Tips for Each Vault Hunter

For C4SH you never let your card duration drop to zero and always re-draw before a fight not during it, use a gun with a large magazine because reloading stops card draw triggers and the Pearl artifact's consecutive hit damage stacks multiplicatively with Full House's damage buff which is why it's basically the only artifact you should use. And for Vex you always match elements to enemy health type so fire for flesh, shock for shields, corrosive for armor because Vex's passive "+50% status effect chance" means elemental matching doubles your effective DPS and you should carry one gun of each element at all times. For Rafa you place turrets at head height on ledges because turrets have perfect aim and will crit consistently then use the turrets' "Rocket Pod" augment for boss fights and "Armor Piercing Rounds" for mobbing. And for Amon do not use Phalanx Mode against enemies that shoot explosive projectiles because the shield reflects them at unpredictable angles so against splash-damage enemies stay mobile and only plant the shield for boss mechanics. For Harlowe you time your Binary Cloak to end behind cover because the 300% damage bonus is powerful but the moment it ends you are a squishy target with full aggro so always have an escape route planned before breaking stealth and stuff like that or you'll just die immediately trust me I've done it
