Why Clone + Dome Is the Most Comfortable Build in BL4

Look, I'm gonna be honest — I respecced 47 times on Zane before I finally gave up on making a pure Digi-Clone damage build work, and I'm not proud of it. The issue is that Zane's damage formula relies entirely on kill skills and action skill uptime, and if your kill skills drop for even 2 seconds in a boss fight, your DPS falls off a cliff from roughly 45 million to about 4.2 million — a 90% drop. The Clone + Dome build solves this by making Zane literally unkillable (barrier Dome augment gives 360-degree cover, 100% bullet immunity from all angles) while the clone does bonkers damage with the Sandhawk buffed by Double Barrel + Boom Enhance + Synchronicity + Donnybrook + Violent Momentum + Seein' Dead maintaining every kill skill permanently. I mean, dead serious, I've run the Guardian Takedown on True Takedown Mayhem 10 with this build and my shield never broke once. Not once. The barrier just eats everything and the clone deletes anything that gets within 25 meters.

The damage math on the clone is what makes this build genuinely absurd. Sandhawk in the clone's hands fires in full-auto instead of burst (the clone ignores the burst-fire mechanic, it's been a known thing since BL3 launch and Gearbox never patched it), so what is normally a 9-projectile burst with a 0.7-second interburst delay becomes a continuous 9-projectile stream at 3.2 bursts per second = 28.8 projectiles per second. Each projectile deals 9,200 base damage at level 55 Mayhem 10, so the clone's raw DPS is 28.8 x 9,200 = 264,960 — before any multipliers. And we have 7 separate multipliers that all compound, so let me walk through the stack.

Skill Tree — Double Agent + Under Cover Spread

So here's the thing about Zane's trees that took me 47 respecs to internalize: Double Agent is the damage tree, Under Cover is the survivability tree, and you need exactly 26 points in Double Agent and 25 in Under Cover to hit every damage and defense breakpoint. The remaining 4 points from level 55 are flex — I put mine into Violent Speed (movement speed, which converts to gun damage via Violent Momentum) but you could also dump them into Cold Bore (cryo damage + status chance for synergy with an Ice Breaker artifact).

Double Agent (26 points): 5/5 Synchronicity (+20% gun damage per active action skill = +40% with both clone and barrier active, permanent uptime), 5/5 Donnybrook (kill skill: +15% gun damage and +2.4% HP regen, stacks twice for +30% damage and +4.8% regen, permanent with Seein' Dead), 3/3 Duct Tape Mod (first shot from a fresh magazine fires a grenade — with clone constantly firing Sandhawk, the clone's "first shot" counts as yours for kill skill activation through Seein' Dead, so you get constant kill skill refreshes without needing to fire yourself), 5/5 Violent Momentum (movement speed converts to gun damage at 4% per 1% of speed bonus, and with Supersonic Man giving +12% speed per kill skill active, permanent +100% gun damage), 3/3 Supersonic Man (movement speed +12% per active kill skill, 3 kill skills active = +36% speed = +144% gun damage via Violent Momentum), 1/1 Double Barrel (clone gets a copy of your current weapon — this is the skill that makes the Sandhawk clone interaction work because the clone gets Sandhawk at your Mayhem 10 scaling, not at base stats), 1/1 Boom Enhance (clone consumes 3 grenades to spawn with +100% gun damage — with a Cloning Maddening Tracker you've always got 11 grenades, so the clone always spawns at +100%), 3/5 Pocket Full of Grenades (grenade regen 9% per second, you regen the 3 grenades the clone ate in about 4 seconds).

Under Cover (25 points): 5/5 Ready for Action (shield recharge delay -29% and recharge rate +29%, meaning your shield starts recharging in 2.1 seconds instead of 3 and at 129% normal rate), 5/5 Confident Competence (+35% gun damage and +15% accuracy while shield is full — permanent because barrier prevents all damage from reaching your shield), 5/5 Brain Freeze (critical hits slow enemies by 32% and eventually freeze them, and frozen enemies take +300% melee damage from clone melee override — not critical but every bit of CC helps), 3/3 Really Expensive Jacket (non-elemental damage resistance +48%, and since most enemy bullet damage is non-elemental, this effectively doubles your effective HP against gunfire), 3/3 Stiff Upper Lip (damage resistance +6% per second shield is active, max 18%, additive with Really Expensive Jacket for 66% non-elemental resistance — you take 34% of incoming bullet damage, and with 75,000+ shield from Transformer + Thin Red Line equivalent, nothing breaks your shield), 1/1 Distributed Denial (barrier gains all current shield effects — with Transformer equipped, barrier also absorbs shock damage, making you immune to shock splash through the barrier which is the only damage type that pierces the Dome), 1/1 Calm Cool Collected (freezing an enemy while shield is full resets action skill cooldowns and durations — with Brain Freeze freezing enemies every 1.5 seconds, your clone and barrier never expire).

Seein' Dead — The Class Mod That Defines Zane

I cannot overstate this: if you don't have a Seein' Dead class mod with at least +3 Donnybrook, this build does not function. Seein' Dead reads "every shot has a 10% chance to activate all kill skills," and with Sandhawk clone firing 28.8 projectiles per second, each projectile has a 10% activation chance, meaning you trigger kill skills roughly 2.88 times per second on average. That's a new Donnybrook stack every 0.35 seconds, so both stacks are permanently active within 0.7 seconds of the clone firing its first shot. Without Seein' Dead, you need to actually kill something every 15 seconds to maintain kill skills — and in a boss fight with no adds, you lose all kill skills and your DPS evaporates.

Farm Seein' Dead from Jackbot in the Handsome Jackpot DLC, and the perfect roll is +3 Donnybrook, +2 Violent Momentum, with passives for +31% SMG damage (applies to Sandhawk), +45% Dahl crit damage (Sandhawk is Dahl), and +25% weapon damage. I spent roughly 140 hours farming this exact roll and settled for +3 Donnybrook +2 Violent Momentum with +31% SMG damage and +25% weapon damage — close enough that the 45% Dahl crit damage loss only costs about 8% total DPS. The full class mod guide breaks down every passive roll for Zane.

Gear — Every Slot Is Locked

I wasted 2 million in-game dollars on respeccing before I realized the gear is non-negotiable. You can flex the artifact between Ice Breaker Victory Rush and Pearl of Ineffable Knowledge depending on content, but the weapons and shield are locked because the clone only copies the weapon you're holding when you deploy it — if you deploy clone with a Hellwalker then swap to Sandhawk, the clone keeps the Hellwalker. So you must be holding Sandhawk when you press the clone action skill button. I've ruined so many Takedown runs by accidentally deploying clone with the wrong weapon and watching it tickle enemies for 200K instead of 2.5M per projectile.

Clone Weapon: Sandhawk (Dahl SMG, automatic, fire or cryo element, x9 projectiles per shot) — the clone fires this at full-auto ignoring the burst mechanic, outputting 28.8 projectiles per second at 9,200 damage per projectile at Mayhem 10. Farm from Katagawa Jr. in Atlas HQ, and the anointment you want is "While Barrier is active, weapon damage is increased by 130%" because the clone counts as a separate entity and its weapon inherits your active anointments. The clone's Sandhawk DPS before multipliers: 28.8 x 9,200 = 264,960 per second.

Zane's Weapon: Monarch (Vladof AR, kinetic x4 bipod) with "While Barrier is active, accuracy and handling +60%" anointment — you're firing through the barrier's amp which gives +25% damage per shot, and the Monarch's x8 projectiles in bipod mode each get amped by the barrier for +25% across 8 projectiles, effectively +200% amp from one shot. Each projectile deals 6,800 base at Mayhem 10, so one Monarch trigger pull through the barrier does 8 x 6,800 x 1.25 = 68,000 base at 9 rounds/sec = 612,000 DPS from Zane's gun alone, before kill skill multipliers. With Synchronicity (1.4) x Donnybrook (1.3) x Violent Momentum (2.44) x Confident Competence (1.35) x Boom Enhance (2.0) x Barrier amp on all shots = your gun DPS multiplies to 612,000 x 1.4 x 1.3 x 2.44 x 1.35 x 2.0 x 1.25 = 612,000 x ~14.9 = roughly 9.1 million DPS from Zane alone. Combined with clone's output: clone DPS (264,960 x 1.4 x 1.3 x 1.44 x 2.0 = 264,960 x 5.24 = 1.39 million) for a combined total of about 10.5 million sustained DPS. For full weapon stats check the legendary weapons database.

Shield: Re-Volter (on shield break: shock damage +200% for 15 seconds) with "On Action Skill Start, activate any shield break or fill effects" anointment — deploying clone triggers this anointment, breaks the Re-Volter instantly, and both you and your clone get +200% shock damage for 15 seconds. The clone's Sandhawk gets 264,960 base x 3.0 (Re-Volter shock conversion) x all the kill skill multipliers for roughly 4.2 million DPS from shock alone. And since Calm Cool Collected resets action skill durations every time you freeze something, you can activate clone again for a fresh Re-Volter proc while the original clone is still alive — you're limited to one clone at a time, but the action skill start anointment procs on deployment regardless, so you technically get an extra Re-Volter activation every time Calm Cool Collected resets your clone action skill.

Artifact: Ice Breaker Victory Rush (frozen enemies take +50% damage, +18% movement speed and damage on badass kill) — the clone's cryo Sandhawk freezes everything within 1.5 seconds of sustained fire, so the +50% damage is permanent against frozen enemies and Victory Rush is permanent since you're killing badasses constantly. Pearl of Ineffable Knowledge is the bossing alternative when bosses can't be frozen — +90% consecutive hit damage in 0.8 seconds with Monarch's fire rate.

Grenade: Cloning Maddening Tracker (x6 child x3 splits = 18 explosions) purely for Boom Enhance consumption and Duct Tape Mod free grenade procs. The clone eats 3 grenades on deployment for +100% damage, and Duct Tape Mod throws 1 grenade every 8 seconds (it has an internal cooldown) which recharges a bit via Pocket Full of Grenades.

Barrier Setup, Augments, and Playstyle

Barrier Augments: Dome (barrier becomes a full sphere, 100% bullet immunity from all angles, the augment that makes you literally unkillable) + All-Rounder (barrier size +40% and cooldown rate +20% — the bigger sphere means you and the clone both fit inside, and the clone's Sandhawk projectiles pass through the barrier from inside to outside with the amp bonus). The Dome makes Zane the only Vault Hunter who can stand completely still in the middle of a Slaughter Shaft Mayhem 10 wave and not take a single point of damage. It's genuinely stupid. I've gone AFK with this build in the Maliwan Takedown spawn room and come back 3 minutes later to find my clone had killed 14 enemies and I was at full health and shield.

Clone Augment: Doppelbanger (manually detonate clone for 50% of its max HP as cryo explosion — the clone's HP at Mayhem 10 is roughly 480K, so the detonation deals 240K cryo splash in an 8-meter radius, applying cryo status to everything, and with Ice Breaker artifact the 240K turns into 360K against frozen enemies). The detonation also frees your action skill slot to deploy clone again for a fresh Re-Volter proc — so the optimal DPS cycle is: deploy clone with Sandhawk → Re-Volter activates (200% shock for 15 seconds) → clone DPS ramps → at 14 seconds, detonate clone (240K-360K cryo AoE) → immediately redeploy clone → fresh Re-Volter proc, fresh Boom Enhance, fresh Sandhawk in clone's hands → repeat. This creates a 30-second sustained damage cycle with zero downtime on Re-Volter, which puts combined DPS at roughly 12-14 million sustained. That's a Wotan phase in 45 seconds with no phase adds. The Mayhem mode guide has the optimal modifier setup for speed runs.

Gameplay Flow: Deploy barrier (Dome) at your position → step forward 2 meters so the barrier is between you and the clone's deploy spot → deploy clone with Sandhawk → barrier amp activates on your and clone's shots → clone annihilates everything in front of it while you sit in the barrier invincible → fire Monarch through barrier for bonus amp damage → detonate clone at 14 seconds for cryo nova → redeploy clone → repeat forever. The only thing that can kill you is standing in the open without barrier down, which happens when you're repositioning between fights — so always deploy barrier first, then move with the barrier active. For the full shield synergy breakdown, the Re-Volter interaction with Distributed Denial adds an extra layer of shock damage to barrier projectiles.
