Honestly picking a manufacturer in Borderlands 4 is like picking a class in an MMO, once you commit you kinda build your entire playstyle around it and tbh most players just stick with whatever looks coolest without actually understanding the mechanics behind each brand, I mean I did that for my first two playthroughs and ngl I was making the game way harder than it needed to be, so here's the thing each of the 9 manufacturers has a completely unique gimmick that changes how you approach combat and some of them are straight-up broken on Mayhem 10/11 while others fall off a cliff after the main story, this guide breaks down every manufacturer ranked by overall endgame viability with DPS output ammo efficiency and Mayhem 10/11 performance as the main scoring criteria

The Big Three: S-Tier Manufacturers

Maliwan sits at the top of the pile and honestly it's not even close, the dual-element switching system means you never have to swap weapons to match elemental weaknesses and the charge mechanic that people used to complain about in BL3 is actually way faster in BL4 plus fully charged shots get a hidden 40% damage multiplier that the game literally never tells you about, combine that with the Flipper SMG which fires 9 projectiles for 1 ammo and stacks damage per hit and you've got a manufacturer that handles literally every situation in the game, best-in-class picks are the Flipper for mobbing and the Plasma Coil for boss melting and both are viable on Mayhem 11 with zero issues Vladof is the DPS king for sustained fire and tbh if you just want to hold down the trigger and watch everything die Vladof is your brand, the under-barrel attachments are the core gimmick and they're not just cosmetic like some people think, the shotgun attachment on ARs gives you burst damage for close range without swapping weapons and the grenade launcher attachment on sniper rifles turns them into pocket rocket launchers, the Monarch AR in bipod mode literally doubles fire rate and tightens spread so you can laser-beam crit spots from across the map, ammo efficiency is the only real weakness because you'll burn through 1000 rounds in like 30 seconds but with the right build that's barely an issue Jakobs is the crit-based precision brand and I mean honestly if you can land headshots consistently Jakobs might actually be better than Vladof for you specifically, the ricochet on crit mechanic means every headshot bounces a bullet to a nearby enemy and on mob-dense maps like Athenas or Lectra City you can clear entire waves with like 3 well-placed shots, the Hellwalker shotgun is technically a Jakobs and it's one of only like three guns in the game that can one-shot Mayhem 10 badasses with zero setup, the weakness is obvious though miss your crits and your DPS drops to basically nothing and on console with a controller that's way harder than it sounds

The Solid Mid-Tier: A-Tier Manufacturers

Torgue is the explosive specialist and the sticky projectile gimmick is honestly one of the most satisfying mechanics in any shooter I've ever played, each projectile sticks to enemies and detonates when you reload or swap weapons and the damage stacks multiplicatively so if you unload a full magazine into a boss then reload you get this massive burst that can skip entire immunity phases, the downside is projectile travel time which makes hitting fast-moving enemies a nightmare and tbh on Mayhem 11 where everything moves at like 2x speed you'll miss more shots than you land unless you're really good at leading targets, best pick is the Prompt Critical for sheer alpha damage Dahl sits right in the middle of the pack and ngl it's the most boring manufacturer but also the most reliable, the alternate fire mode toggle between full-auto and burst is useful for ammo conservation and Dahl weapons generally have the best handling stats across the board so if you hate recoil management Dahl is your answer, the Sand Hawk sniper fires 9 projectiles in a bird-shaped spread pattern and on large bosses it's still one of the highest burst damage weapons in the game, the problem is Dahl doesn't really scale as well as the top three on Mayhem 11 because the base damage per bullet is lower and you can't rely on gimmick multipliers to close the gap Hyperion is the accuracy brand with the shield attachment that deploys when you ADS and honestly this used to be way better in BL2 when the Bee shield combo was a thing but in BL4 the shield health pool doesn't scale well into Mayhem 10/11 so it pops in one hit and becomes useless until it regenerates, the reverse recoil mechanic where accuracy increases the longer you fire is cool in theory but in practice you're dead before it kicks in on high Mayhem because standing still for more than 2 seconds is basically suicide, the Butcher shotgun is the only Hyperion weapon worth farming and even that is outclassed by the Hellwalker in every way

The Bottom Three: Why They Fall Off

Atlas is the tracking brand where you tag an enemy with a tracker dart and then all your bullets home in on that target and honestly this sounds amazing on paper but the tracker dart damage is negligible and tbh the homing bullets have a damage penalty that's like 30% lower than direct hits so you're trading a massive DPS loss for convenience, it's great for casual playthroughs where you just want to shoot from behind cover without aiming but on Mayhem 10/11 where every second of damage matters you simply cannot afford the damage tax, the OPQ System AR is the only Atlas weapon worth mentioning and it's mostly carried by its alternate fire drone not the homing mechanic Tediore is the reload-throw brand where instead of reloading you throw the gun and it either explodes or turns into a turret or homes in on enemies depending on the weapon type and ngl this is the most fun manufacturer by far but it's also mathematically the worst because you're literally throwing away ammo, the explosion damage scales off remaining magazine ammo so to maximize damage you reload-throw with a full mag which means you burn through your entire ammo pool in like 10 throws and then you're standing there with nothing to shoot, on Mayhem 10/11 where enemies have quintillion HP the throw damage doesn't even tickle them and you're just wasting money on ammo refills COV is the infinite-magazine brand where weapons don't reload they just overheat and need to cool down and I mean this used to be cool in BL3 when the overheat mechanic added a risk-reward layer but in BL4 they nerfed the base damage across the board and the overheat threshold doesn't scale with Mayhem levels so you overheat in like 2 seconds on Mayhem 10/11 because you have to hold the trigger so much longer to kill anything, the Yellowcake launcher carried COV's reputation for a while but after the 2025 damage nerf it's just not the same anymore and tbh there's no reason to pick COV over Vladof if you want sustained fire

Pro Tip: If you're running a crit build (FL4K or Zane), go Jakobs. If you're running a splash damage build (Moze), go Torgue or Maliwan. If you're running a generalist build, Vladof gives you the most consistent DPS floor. Maliwan is the only manufacturer that's S-tier for literally every build archetype, which is why it takes the top spot.
