Detailed Fight Strategy
The Empyrean Sentinel is a proper raid boss designed for a full party of four and I'm not gonna sugarcoat it, this is the hardest fight in BL4 and if you go in without coordination you're gonna have a bad time, the fight takes place in The Nexus and has two completely different phases, a platforming phase where the arena splits into floating crystal platforms and a ground phase where you fight the Sentinel directly, this is not a boss you can just out-DPS with good gear you actually need coordination and assigned roles and communication and honestly that's what makes it so rewarding when you finally clear it, idk maybe some teams can just brute force it with perfect gear but most groups need actual coordination and if you're trying to pug this fight you're probably in for a rough time, the platforming phase is what separates this from every other boss in the game because the arena floor shatters and you're left standing on floating crystal platforms that drift around and falling off means instant death no revive nothing, the platforms move slowly but unpredictably and you need to jump between them while the Sentinel fires at you from the center of the arena, there are crystal formations on some platforms that act as shields during the Sentinel Blast which is a full-arena AOE that happens after the platform phase, everyone needs to be behind a crystal shield when that blast goes off and if even one person is exposed they're dead, communication is absolutely key here because you need to call out which platform has a crystal and get everyone there and stuff, I've seen so many wipes where three people were safe behind a crystal and one person was on the wrong platform and just got deleted and then everything snowballed from there
But then you have the ground phase which is more traditional but still intense. The Sentinel has a massive health pool and uses an Enrage Beam that tracks the highest DPS player, this is where the tank role comes in because one player usually whoever has the most shield and health regen intentionally draws the beam by doing high burst damage, that player then runs in circles around the arena edge while the beam follows them and meanwhile the other three players free-DPS the Sentinel, if the tank goes down the beam switches to the next highest DPS and things snowball fast. The Summon Guardians move adds Eridium-infused guardians with their own immunity phases and the add-clear player needs to kill these immediately because the guardians can body-block your shots and their attacks stack up fast, don't ignore the guardians they will cause a wipe and I've seen groups wipe at 5% because someone decided to ignore the adds and just burn the boss, like I'm not 100% sure this is the hardest mechanic but it's definitely the one that causes the most wipes in my experience. Assign roles before the fight, one tank draws beam and runs, one add-clear kills guardians ASAP, and two DPS focus Sentinel, during platform phases spread out to maximize crystal coverage and save Seraph drop anointments for increased raid loot chances, expected clear time with an optimized party is 8-12 minutes and that's if everything goes well, with a pug it might be like 20 minutes or you might just wipe for two hours and give up or whatever
Best Vault Hunters for This Boss
For the tank role Moze is the best and it's not even close, Iron Bear gives her a second health bar and the mech can actually survive the Enrage Beam for several seconds which is huge, a Bloodletter class mod with a Deathless artifact gives her shield capacity in the hundreds of thousands and she becomes almost unkillable, I've tanked this fight on Moze and honestly once you get the kite path down it becomes almost automatic. For add-clear Amara is exceptional because Ties That Bind links all guardians together and a Reflux melts the whole pack in seconds, her Phasegrasp also temporarily immobilizes the tougher guardians with immunity phases which is super clutch tbh. For DPS Fl4k and Zane are both great, Fl4k's Fade Away with a Monarch in bipod mode does absurd sustained damage against the Sentinel's large hitbox during the ground phase, Zane's Digi-Clone can draw the Sentinel's attention away from the DPS players and his movement speed bonuses make platforming phases safer, for a solo attempt Moze is really the only viable option because Iron Bear gives you the survivability to tank mechanics that are designed for four players, soloing the Empyrean Sentinel is one of the hardest things you can do in BL4 and honestly requires near-perfect play, I've tried it on every character and only Moze can realistically pull it off without losing your mind, and honestly I'm not even sure it's worth soloing unless you're doing it for the bragging rights or whatever
Speed Farming Tips
Let's be real you don't speed farm the Empyrean Sentinel, this is a raid boss and even with a fully optimized four-player party at M10 a clear takes 8-12 minutes and with an average group it's more like 15-20, but there are ways to optimize and the biggest time save is having the add-clear player use a Reflux or Brainstormer to chain-clear guardians in one burst because every second spent fighting guardians is a second not damaging the Sentinel and those seconds add up fast, the tank should use an artifact with bonus movement speed and slide speed because the faster the tank can run circles the longer the DPS window lasts and that's literally the difference between a clear and a wipe sometimes, the DPS players should both be using high-sustained-damage weapons like the Monarch or Light Show not burst weapons, burst damage is wasted if you have to reload during a damage window and I've seen so many DPS players bring a Kickcharger to this fight and then sit there reloading while the damage window closes, and absolutely use the ammo crates in the arena between phases because running out of ammo here means a wipe, for solo runs Moze with Iron Bear and Short Fuse is the only build that can clear within a reasonable time and even then you're looking at 20+ minutes, the Seraph loot is the real reason to run this because the exclusive class mods and the Seraph's Wrath RPG are some of the best items in the game and honestly the 2% Sentinel skin drop is one of the rarest cosmetics and people will know you put in the work when they see it, and stuff like that makes the grind worth it imo even if the clear time is painful
Common Death Causes
Falling off platforms during the platforming phase is the number one wipe cause and I've died to this so many times it's embarrassing, the platforms move in patterns that aren't always obvious and one missed jump means instant death with no revive, never jump to a platform you're not 100% sure you can reach because if you wait for the platform to drift closer there's no timer on the platform phase so patience is better than a wipe, and honestly maybe just practice the platform phase a few times without trying to damage the boss until you get comfortable with the movement patterns. The Enrage Beam is the second biggest killer because the tank dies or loses aggro and the beam switches to a DPS player who's not ready for it, if you're designated DPS and the beam suddenly targets you stop shooting immediately and start running, the beam aggro is based on recent damage dealt so whoever did the most damage in the last few seconds gets targeted and DPS players need to manage their damage output if the tank goes down, it's kind of counterintuitive because you want to do damage but sometimes doing less damage keeps you alive longer. The Summon Guardians cause wipes because they're ignored for too long, when three immunity-phase guardians are body-blocking your shots while the Sentinel is charging a blast things go bad fast, the add-clear player has the most important job in the fight and it's not glamorous but it's essential so treat it seriously. And last thing the crystal shields during the Sentinel Blast are destructible, if the Sentinel or a guardian damages a crystal before the blast goes off it breaks and that safe spot is gone, protect the crystals and don't shoot near them, I've had a Fl4k accidentally Two F4ng a crystal shield and wipe the entire group and we still give him grief about it, and tbh maybe I'm still a little salty about that one but it's a good lesson to learn, protect the crystals at all costs because losing one might mean losing the run
