Farming Strategy
I've died to this so many damn times
For weapon loadout you absolutely need corrosive primary for armor and shock secondary for the shield because Katagawa Ball has that dual layer defense and if you only bring one element you're gonna suffer and I learned this the hard way my first time through when I showed up with like a fire SMG thinking I was hot stuff and then spent forever doing zero damage it was honestly embarrassing and I literally had to fast travel out and respec my whole loadout. And the arena has pillars that block machine guns and rockets but they can be destroyed by the laser cannon so you need to rotate positions and don't get too comfortable behind one pillar or you'll find yourself without cover real quick and then you're just standing there eating rockets like a moron, happened to me more times than I want to admit. So anyway then in phase 3 after the armor breaks the glowing core takes 2x damage so burst it down fast with everything you've got, action skill grenades heavy ammo all of it and it's honestly so satisfying when he just melts after all that armor grinding I mean it's borderline cathartic. Moze with a corrosive Flipper and Short Fuse tears through both armor and shield simultaneously which is honestly kind of unfair and stuff like that, basically a cheat code for this fight tbh and if you haven't tried it you're missing out big time.

Detailed Fight Strategy
Katagawa Ball is a massive spherical Maliwan weapon platform that hovers around the Skywell-27 arena
Honestly this boss can be either super easy or incredibly annoying depending entirely on whether you brought the right elements and I've definitely rage quit this fight more than once when I forgot my shock weapon and just sat there chipping away at the shield with a fire gun like an absolute clown, the arena is this orbital platform with pillars and low walls scattered around for cover and the fight is a three phase armor grind where phase 1 is heavy armor phase 2 adds an energy shield on top of armor and phase 3 exposes a glowing core that takes bonus damage, pretty straightforward on paper but kind of a pain in practice ngl and your whole run lives or dies by whether you remembered to pack both elements and I still forget sometimes and then I'm just standing there swearing at my screen. Phase 1 feels straightforward but you need corrosive weapons from the start and the Ball uses machine guns that track you and rocket pods that fire homing missiles and the machine guns you can strafe behind pillars but the rockets you need to dodge at the last moment with a slide because if you dodge too early they re-track and hit you anyway which is super annoying and I still mess this up constantly, use the large cover pillars constantly and don't get caught in the open and I mean it's like the most basic advice but somehow I still forget it every other run or whatever. Oh and the Ball also does a Charge Slam where it glows blue and slams into the ground so jump backward when you see the blue glow because the AOE is bigger than it looks and you will get hit if you're too close, trust me I've tested this extensively by dying to it a bunch of times and it never stops being frustrating tbh.
Phase 2 starts at 70% HP
And the Ball gains an energy shield on top of its remaining armor and this is where a lot of people get stuck because they don't bring a shock weapon and they're just sitting there chipping away at the shield with the wrong element, strip the shield with shock first then go back to corrosive for the armor and it's not complicated but you'd be surprised how many people mess this up, I know I did the first three times honestly and it was so frustrating until I finally figured it out. In this phase he starts using the Missile Barrage which is his most dangerous attack, multiple missiles launch and track you slowly and the key is to run behind the arena's large walls because the missiles hit the walls and detonate and don't try to outrun them in the open or you're gonna eat all of them and die instantly and that's just facts and I've tested this the hard way more times than I can count like seriously I've been deleted by those missiles so many times.
Phase 3 at 35% HP is the home stretch and this is where it gets real. Also all weapon systems are active plus he gets a Laser Cannon and deploys drones. So things get pretty chaotic honestly but the Laser Cannon does devastating damage though it's slow to aim so break line of sight behind pillars but keep rotating because the beam destroys your cover and you don't wanna be standing there thinking you're safe when suddenly there's no pillar and a laser in your face, I've been caught by that exact situation way too many times. And when the glowing core gets exposed after the armor breaks this is your burn phase and the core takes 2x damage from all sources so unload everything, action skill grenades heavy ammo all of it and just go absolutely nuts on it and the fight ends fast if you saved your cooldowns. It's honestly so satisfying when he just melts in phase 3 after all that armor grinding like genuinely one of the most cathartic moments in the game imo, the payoff after all that work is just incredible honestly.
Best Vault Hunters for This Boss
Moze is just the best choice here and I've tried them all
Moze is the best for Katagawa Ball because she can handle the dual layer defense better than anyone and a corrosive Flipper with Short Fuse just chews through armor and you can swap to shock charge for the shield phase and it's honestly kind of broken how good she is here, Iron Bear with Vanquisher Rocket Pods set to corrosive also just ignores the shield phase entirely since the splash damage penetrates and Forge keeps your ammo up during this long fight which is huge because running out of ammo in phase 3 is basically a wipe and I've had that happen too many times and it's the worst feeling ever. Amara is strong here because her elemental damage bonuses stack well against the Ball's layered defenses and Ties That Bind links the Ball to its drones in phase 3 for massive bonus damage and it's pretty effective tbh even if it's not as fast as Moze but still totally viable you know. Fl4k with Fade Away and a high crit corrosive weapon like the Monocle can chunk the core in phase 3 for massive damage and it's satisfying when those crits land and a third of the health bar just disappears in one burst, that feeling when everything lines up perfectly and the boss just evaporates is honestly why I play this game. Zane is decent but struggles because there aren't many adds to proc kill skills though Digi-Clone does draw aggro which is helpful for the Missile Barrage and he's not amazing but not useless either, kind of middle of the pack you know. Anyway the ranking is Moze then Amara then Fl4k then Zane with Moze being clearly the best and the rest being kind of whatever you feel like playing honestly, bring Moze if you want speed and anyone else if you're feeling spicy or just like suffering, etc and you get the idea.
Mayhem Mode Differences
At M4+ the Ball's armor gets significantly thicker and you absolutely need a well rolled corrosive weapon or the first phase alone takes 5 minutes and you're just sitting there wondering if your gun is even doing anything, the energy shield in phase 2 also scales up a lot so shock weapons become mandatory like you literally cannot skip them anymore no matter how good your corrosive weapon is and I found this out the hard way obviously and it wasn't fun at all. At M6+ the Missile Barrage missiles track faster and hit harder and where at lower Mayhem you could sometimes tank one missile at M6+ eating a single missile takes most of your shield and you're probably gonna go down right after and it's honestly brutal. At M10 Katagawa Ball is honestly a slog if you're not prepared and the armor and shield scaling is no joke and you'll burn through ammo like crazy, bring a Cutpurse artifact for ammo regen on melee or you're gonna be scrounging for ammo boxes mid fight and the Laser Cannon at M10 is basically a death sentence if it touches you so pillar positioning is life or death and don't get lazy with cover because that beam will humble you real quick, I know because it humbled me multiple times. Modifier wise Galaxy Brain helps because the Ball's core is a crit spot and Speed Demon helps dodge missiles but Dazed and Infused is a hard reroll because you need specific elements for armor and shield and that modifier just ruins this fight completely, like it's not even worth attempting. Also Healy Avenger is actually great for the sustain. Pool Party or any floor hazard is bad because the arena already has limited safe space. So Post Mortem is death and just straight up death and reroll that modifier immediately if you get it you get the idea, it's just not happening and I don't even try it anymore.
Speed Farming Tips
The Skywell-27 fast travel station is about a 35 second run to the Katagawa Ball arena with no trash in between and there's an ammo vendor right before the boss door too, super convenient honestly and one less thing to worry about and the speed strategy is basically corrosive weapon for phase 1 shock for the shield in phase 2 corrosive again for remaining armor then burn the core in phase 3 and it's pretty much a cycle you repeat over and over once you get the rhythm down and you can kind of zone out and farm it while listening to a podcast or whatever and honestly that's how I've gotten most of my Storm snipers, just grinding on autopilot. Moze with a corrosive Flipper and a shock Flipper hot swapped can do the whole fight in about 90 seconds at M10 and the weapon swap speed from a good artifact matters a lot here so don't sleep on that stat and Iron Bear in the opening seconds lets you skip a lot of phase 1 damage and get right to the good part. But here's the thing nobody mentions, you can shoot the rocket pods on the Ball's sides to disable the rocket attacks and it's not worth it on lower Mayhem but at M10 disabling one pod makes the Missile Barrage much more manageable and I only figured this out after like 50 kills which is honestly embarrassing and I wish someone had told me sooner. The dedicated drops from Katagawa Ball are honestly kinda mid and Storm is decent for shock builds Polybius is fun but not meta and the Orbital is situationally good. Anyway the Skywell-27 Core artifact is actually low key amazing for cooldown builds and I've used it in so many different setups it's kind of underrated imo and definitely the sleeper hit of the loot table, don't sleep on it seriously.
Common Death Causes
Missile Barrage phase 2. Nothing else comes close honestly
The Missile Barrage in phase 2 kills more people than the Laser Cannon and it's multiple tracking missiles and if you're caught in the open you eat all of them and die instantly so hide behind the big arena walls when you hear the missile launch sound. The pillars block machine guns but they don't block missiles and only the large walls do, so know which cover works for which attack or you're gonna learn the difference the hard way like I did and probably still do sometimes because I get greedy and think I can dodge them, nope and then I'm on the ground wondering what happened.
The Charge Slam hitbox is probably the most deceptive in the game and I still can't believe how many times I've died to it
The blue glow suggests a certain radius but the actual damage zone is like 50 percent bigger and jump back way further than you think you need to because I've been caught by this thing so many times it's embarrassing and I still fall for it honestly every few runs. Also the Laser Cannon in phase 3 is avoidable if you're paying attention but it's frequently the thing that kills you while you're focused on DPSing the exposed core because the beam also destroys your cover pillars so you need to rotate and don't stand behind the same pillar for more than one beam sweep like I keep doing and then I'm just standing in the open wondering where my cover went. And the drones in phase 3 seem like nothing but they'll finish you off when you're low and clear a couple if you need health or you'll regret ignoring them and then you're staring at the respawn screen wondering what happened and kicking yourself. So last thing and I cannot stress this enough, ammo management is a real issue because this is a long fight with a lot of armor and running out of ammo in phase 3 is a death sentence since the drones and lasers don't give you a break to go find ammo crates and bring a Cutpurse or some way to regen ammo, seriously it'll save your run, running out of ammo when the boss has 5% HP left is the worst feeling in Borderlands period and I've rage quit at that exact moment more than once tbh.
