BL4 Warden Boss Guide

The Warden is The Anvil's brutal prison overseer and honestly this fight is one of those multi phase nightmares where the boss just keeps evolving and getting more ridiculous each time you break a body section like he literally grows new body parts and gains new attacks as the fight goes on which is both cool and annoying at the same time and tbh the first time I fought him I had no idea about the breakable sections mechanic so I was just dumping mags into his body wondering why nothing was happening and then he grew rocket shoulders and laser cannons and I was like oh okay so that's how it works and then I died obviously, you gotta systematically destroy each body part to force the next evolution and you absolutely need corrosive weapons because his armor scaling is insane especially at higher Mayhem levels where he just becomes this unkillable tank if you don't have the right elements, but yeah once you learn the break priority the fight becomes way more manageable and actually pretty fun

Farming Strategy

The key to farming Warden efficiently is knowing what to break first and honestly most people get this wrong on their first few runs, your break priority should always be shoulder pods first then head cannon then body because breaking parts disables those attacks permanently for the rest of the fight and if you leave the shoulder pods up they'll just keep spamming homing rockets at you and you'll die. Corrosive weapons are super strong here because Warden has heavy armor through all phases and I mean like really heavy armor, you basically don't want to use anything except corrosive for the breakable parts and then maybe swap to incendiary once the armor is gone but honestly just sticking with corrosive works fine too. Moze is ridiculously good for this fight because Iron Bear with Vanquisher Rocket Pods can target and destroy each breakable section independently with lock-on targeting so you don't even need to aim precisely, it's basically easy mode. Amara is also strong because Ties That Bind links Warden to his drones for massive shared damage and Phasegrasp can lock him in place which is huge during stage 3 when he's jumping around everywhere and you can't track him, and stuff like that, you just gotta find what works for your build I guess

Detailed Fight Strategy

Stage 1 is honestly the easiest part of the fight but don't get complacent because the Warden starts as a basic humanoid with a rifle and flashbang grenades and the rifle burst is pretty standard just strafe and use the arena's concrete barriers for cover but the flashbang is what gets people you'll see a grenade indicator and if you're facing it when it goes off your screen goes completely white for like 3 seconds and you can't see anything and you're just hoping the rifle fire doesn't hit you, turn away the moment you see the grenade icon pop up and you'll be fine. During this phase just chip away at his health with whatever you've got no real strategy needed because he goes down fast, pretty much a warm up phase tbh and you shouldn't be dying here unless you get flashbanged and then comboed which has definitely happened to me before.

Stage 2 is where things get real and he grows these armored shoulder pods that fire homing rockets which track pretty aggressively like they follow you around corners and everything and your first priority when phase 2 starts should be destroying those shoulder pods because once both pods are gone he can't fire rockets anymore for the rest of the fight and that's basically your ticket to a clean run, so don't just blast his body aim for the shoulders I mean literally aim up and focus the shoulder pods until they pop off. He also gets an energy shield in this phase that makes him immune from the front so you gotta circle around him or use shock splash weapons to break it and the arena has these upper walkways on both sides and honestly going up there gives you a much better angle to shoot down at his shoulder pods, I always go up there when phase 2 starts and it makes the fight way easier and I've been doing that for like 50 runs and it works every single time.

Stage 3 is the final evolution and it's pretty intense. Dead serious. He grows this head-mounted laser cannon that does absolutely absurd damage, like if you eat the full beam you're dead in under 2 seconds regardless of your shield and I've been one shot by that thing so many times and it never stops being frustrating. Break the head cannon as fast as possible, it should be your only target when phase 3 starts. Also he summons drones and does ground pound shockwaves but the drones are actually helpful because you can leave a few alive for Second Wind opportunities. The ground pound has a tell where he raises both arms. You have about a second to jump. Fight him near the arena's central pillar, it blocks the laser cannon and gives you breathing room to deal with drones. But honestly if you don't break that head cannon immediately the fight just becomes a scramble to not die and you will die probably

Best Vault Hunters for This Boss

Moze is absolutely the best here and it's not even close Iron Bear with Vanquisher Rocket Pods can target and destroy each breakable section independently with lock-on targeting so you don't even need to aim precisely at the shoulder pods or head cannon and honestly it feels like cheating, Short Fuse explosions ignore his energy shield entirely and a corrosive Flipper with a Blast Master class mod basically melts through every phase without needing to swap weapons it's honestly kinda broken how good Moze is against the Warden and I've used her for like 90% of my Warden kills and never once felt like I was struggling. Amara is pretty strong too Ties That Bind links the Warden to his drones so all that shared damage adds up fast and her Phasegrasp can temporarily lock him in place which is huge during stage 3 when he's jumping around everywhere and you can't track him. But Fl4k does fine I guess Fade Away crits on the breakable sections work well but his pet dies constantly to the laser cannon and rocket barrage and then you lose all your pet bonuses and you're basically just a worse Moze. Zane is okay but he relies on kill skills and there aren't enough enemies in this fight to keep his momentum going consistently so he falls behind, basically the ranking is Moze then Amara then Fl4k then Zane and it's honestly not even debatable

Mayhem Mode Differences

At M4 and above the Warden's breakable sections get significantly more health so you really need corrosive weapons to get through them efficiently and if you're running any other element on the breakable parts you're basically griefing yourself. The drone swarm in stage 3 also spawns more drones at higher Mayhem which is a blessing and a curse, more drones means more Second Wind targets but also more incoming damage and sometimes you get swarmed and die anyway. At M8 and above the laser cannon becomes a one-shot kill even through most shields like it doesn't matter how tanky your build is you just die, so breaking that head cannon is absolutely mandatory the moment it appears and you cannot delay it even a little bit.

Mayhem 10 Warden is genuinely one of the harder M10 fights and I mean like top 5 hardest for sure, his armor scaling gets ridiculous and if you don't have a well-rolled corrosive weapon you're gonna be there forever just chipping away at his health bar. The rocket barrage also gets a damage buff that makes it chunk through even 100k plus shields and suddenly you're going down from rockets you thought you could tank. Modifier wise you want to avoid Dazed and Infused because random elemental resists can make your corrosive weapons useless and that's basically game over. Galaxy Brain is actually good since it makes his breakable parts bigger targets. Speed Demon helps with dodging the rockets. But honestly if you roll Buddy System just reroll, the last thing this fight needs is more flying enemies, like seriously who thought that modifier was a good idea

Speed Farming Tips

The Warden isn't the fastest farm in the game but you can optimize it pretty well once you know the fight and the spawn point at The Anvil fast travel station is about a 30 second run to the arena and there's an ammo vendor right before the boss door which is nice because you'll burn through a lot of ammo on his breakable parts, the real speed trick is breaking the shoulder pods and head cannon immediately when each phase starts and I mean immediately don't waste time damaging his body while the breakable parts are still up because those parts are what let you skip his more dangerous attack patterns and the fight goes way faster if you just focus on breaking them first, Moze with a corrosive Monarch in bipod mode can destroy both shoulder pods in like 5 seconds then swap to a shock weapon for the energy shield back to corrosive for the head cannon and then just burn his body and the whole kill takes about a minute with an optimized build which isn't amazing but it's consistent. Tbh one trick I've found, the shoulder pods count as separate entities for Short Fuse procs so Moze gets double explosions when hitting them and the damage is just stupid high. Also the dedicated drops are honestly worth the farm, Yellowcake and Nukem are both top tier launchers and the Freeman is underrated IMO, I've gotten some really good rolls on that thing and I use it all the time now

Common Death Causes

The laser cannon in stage 3 is the number one killer by a mile and honestly it's not even close, people get tunnel vision trying to finish off his health bar and just eat the full beam and then they're dead and they don't even know what happened because the beam kills you so fast you don't have time to react. You cannot tank it. Period. When you see the red targeting laser appear you have maybe a second to break line of sight behind a pillar and if you don't you're dead. The second biggest killer is the rocket barrage combined with the drone swarm, you're dodging rockets not watching the drones and suddenly you're down with no Second Wind target in range and you're just lying there waiting to die, clear a drone or two whenever you get a moment to breathe don't ignore them completely because I've definitely ignored them and paid for it.

The flashbang in stage 1 seems harmless but if you get blinded while the Warden is firing rockets from stage 2 and yes his attack patterns can overlap if you push phases fast you're basically dead because you can't see anything and rockets are homing in on you and you just take damage from sources you can't even react to. So even in the first phase respect the flashbang and turn away every single time. And don't try to melee him during stage 3 the ground pound shockwave punishes close range fighters hard and I've seen so many Amara players run in for a melee build and just get deleted instantly like their whole health bar gone in one slam, it's brutal. Stay at mid range use the central pillar and methodically break each body part, this fight rewards patience way more than aggression and if you rush it you're just gonna keep dying, or whatever, you get the idea
