BL4 Wotan the Invincible Raid Boss Guide

Wotan is the ultimate Borderlands 4 endgame challenge and honestly this fight is absolutely insane it's this colossal Maliwan super-mech with 4 escalating phases and the infamous Double Split where the boss literally divides into two independent enemies that attack you at the same time and you have to deal with both halves while also dodging arena-wide attacks and managing adds and not running out of ammo and trying to stay alive and coordinating with your team and honestly it's just chaos from start to finish, tbh the first time I attempted this I got absolutely destroyed in phase 2 and didn't even make it to the split and I was running what I thought was a pretty good build and I just got humbled immediately, you need to bring your absolute best gear and ideally a coordinated team because soloing this is one of the hardest things you can do in the entire game and I've only managed it like twice with a fully optimized Moze build and even then it was close both times and I was sweating by the end

Team Strategy

For a 4 player team you want 1 tank running Moze with Iron Bear because she can literally soak up damage from one half during the split while the rest of the team deals with the other half, 1 support with Zane's Barrier for the missile barrages and Clone for drawing aggro, and then 2 DPS running Fl4k crit and Amara elemental builds to actually melt the health bars. During the Double Split the most important thing is focusing the lower half first because it charges at you and does way more damage up close, the upper half stays at range and is honestly easier to dodge so you can save it for second. Also you need to set up revive rotations, designate one person as the reviver like Zane with Clone or Fl4k with pet, and don't have everyone try to revive at the same time because then you all die and you're back at the start. Ammo management is super important too, the death spheres and turrets drop ammo so don't skip the adds, they're basically your resource refill and if you run out of ammo during the split phase you're just dead, and stuff like that honestly coordinating all this is why Wotan is the hardest fight in the game

Solo Tips

If you're insane enough to solo Wotan which I've tried and mostly failed at, Fl4k with Fade Away and Monarch bipod is probably your best bet because invisibility lets you reposition safely during the split phase which is the part that kills solo runs the most, when both halves are on you at once you need that invis to reset, Zane with Barrier and Clone is also decent the clone draws aggro from one half while you kill the other and Barrier blocks the missile spam which honestly saves your life like every 30 seconds. Moze with Iron Bear gives you immunity frames during dangerous phase transitions which can save your life when things get chaotic. Amara with Ties That Bind and Sustainment gives massive lifesteal during add phases and honestly the sustain helps a ton when you're the only target for both Wotan halves and basically keeps you alive when you should be dead. But ngl soloing this fight is mostly about patience and not getting greedy with your DPS, you can't just unload and hope for the best like you can with some other bosses

Detailed Fight Strategy

Wotan the Invincible is the Maliwan Blacksite raid boss and it's honestly the hardest fight in base BL4 multiple phases each more chaotic than the last and if you're not prepared you're gonna die in like 30 seconds flat honestly phase one you fight Wotan's outer shell which is this giant mech with missile barrages shield walls it deploys and a rotating laser that covers 360 degrees and I've been caught by that laser so many times it's not even funny, destroy the shield generators on its shoulders first then focus the chest core and the missile barrage you can shoot down or just hide behind the structures in the arena but honestly the missiles track so aggressively that hiding behind cover is way more reliable and I basically just camp behind the arena towers the whole first phase. Then phase two the outer shell breaks and the smaller inner Wotan emerges and it's much faster more aggressive and now uses energy swords for melee attacks it teleports around the arena leaving behind shock pools that stack up and cover the floor and suddenly you have nowhere safe to stand and you're just taking damage constantly. And the split phase is the run killer for most groups, Wotan splits into two entities the upper half floats and rains projectiles and the lower half chases you for melee and you have to deal with both at the same time so focus one half at a time, I usually go upper half first since its ranged attacks are harder to avoid while kiting the lower half but honestly either order works. Then phase three both halves reform into a final berserk Wotan with all previous attacks plus a room-wide explosion you need to hide behind specific pillars to avoid and the safe pillars have a blue glow so look for that or you're just dead and you won't even know what killed you

Best Vault Hunters

This is a coordinated team fight more than a solo encounter and honestly if you're trying to solo this without a fully optimized build you're gonna have a bad time, but for solo your best options are Moze with Iron Bear who can survive the split phase by tanking one half while damaging the other and that's basically how I got my solo clears, FL4K with a pet build can let the pet distract one half during split phase but the pet dies constantly so it's not super reliable. Zane's barrier is invaluable for team play during the missile barrages and his Clone can split aggro during the dual phase. Amara's crowd control on the adds that spawn throughout keeps the arena manageable and her lifesteal helps her survive the constant chip damage, but tbh for team play you want the full composition of Moze tank Zane support Fl4k DPS Amara DPS and if you're missing any of those roles the fight gets significantly harder

Speed Farming

Wotan farming is an endgame activity requiring optimized builds and honestly it's not really a speed farm at all, the dedicated drops are some of the best in the game including the Redistributor SMG and Kyb's Worth so it's worth doing but you're not gonna be running 45 second loops like Traunt or anything close to that. Running with a full team cuts the time significantly since you can split DPS during the dual phase and each person focuses one half which is way faster than soloing both halves yourself. Corrosive and shock weapons are essential, corrosive for the mech shell and shock for Wotan's shields and if you don't bring both elements you're basically griefing your team. But honestly the fight takes however long it takes and you just gotta accept that, maybe put on some music or something because you're gonna be here for a while

Common Death Causes

The split phase kills more runs than everything else combined and I mean literally everything else, getting targeted by both halves at once without team coordination is a death sentence and if you don't have a designated tank drawing aggro you just die and you don't even have time to react. The room-wide explosion in the final phase kills you if you're behind the wrong pillar and the safe pillars have a blue glow and if you hide behind one that doesn't glow you're dead and you won't know why until you look it up, honestly I died to that explosion like 10 times before I figured out the blue glow thing because nobody tells you about it. The shock pools left by teleports stack up and cover the arena and suddenly there's no safe ground and you're just taking damage and dying slowly which somehow feels worse than getting one shot. Running out of ammo is a real problem too this is a long fight so bring ammo regen or be ready to scrounge during transitions. But honestly the worst thing is when you're in the split phase and both halves decide to focus you at the same time and you go from full health to zero in like half a second there's basically no counterplay when that happens you just die and hope your team can revive you, or whatever, you learn to live with it, you know, it's just part of the Wotan experience
