Vault Hunters

Borderlands 4 Wiki Vault Hunters — All 4 Characters Guide

Borderlands 4 introduces four new Vault Hunters, each with three deep skill trees and multiple action skills that create genuinely different playstyles. This page is the overview — if you want detailed skill tree breakdowns and min-maxed gear recommendations for each character, check the individual character pages and the full Builds database.

Quick Comparison: Which Vault Hunter Should You Pick?

Each BL4 Vault Hunter fills a specific role. This comparison table maps playstyle to character so you can pick based on how you actually want to play, not just which one has the prettiest character model.

Amara — The Siren

Elemental damage specialist with three action skill variants: Phasegrasp (crowd control, locks enemies in place), Phasecast (line projectile that deals massive elemental damage), and Phaseslam (AoE ground slam). Amara's skill trees lean into status effect spreading, melee damage scaling, and action skill cooldown reduction.

The Mystical Assault tree turns Phasecast into a boss-killing nuke. Fist of the Elements chains elemental DOTs across linked enemies — one corroded enemy dies, the DOT jumps to everything nearby. Brawl tree scales melee damage to absurd levels with health regen per kill, making Amara nearly unkillable in high-density mob fights.

Best legendary weapons for Amara: Hellfire (Maliwan SMG, stacking DOT), Cutsman (Maliwan SMG, elemental beam), Recursion (Maliwan shotgun, ricochet projectiles). Full build guide at Amara Build Guide and Amara Elemental Build.

FL4K — The Beastmaster

Pet/summoner class with a permanent companion creature that fights alongside you, draws aggro, and can revive you when downed. Three action skills: Fade Away (stealth with guaranteed crits), Rakk Attack (send flying rakks that deal damage), and Gamma Burst (teleport pet and create radiation aura).

FL4K is the strongest solo character. The pet provides a self-revive mechanic that no other Vault Hunter has — while in Fight For Your Life, your pet keeps enemies occupied and can pick you up. The Stalker tree specializes in crit damage and health regen. Master tree buffs the pet's damage and unlocks shared buffs. Hunter tree adds sniper damage multipliers that stack multiplicatively.

Best legendary weapons for FL4K: Unforgiven (Jakobs pistol, +500% crit), Lyuda (Vladof sniper, 3-projectile split), Rowan's Call (Jakobs AR, crit ammo return). Full build guide at FL4K Build Guide and FL4K Crit Build.

Moze — The Gunner

Heavy weapons and demolition expert. Moze's action skill summons Iron Bear — a deployable mech with interchangeable weapon mounts (minigun, railgun, flamethrower, rocket pods, grenade launcher). While in Iron Bear, Moze is invulnerable during entry/exit animations and gains massive damage output.

The Demolition Woman tree focuses on splash damage and grenade regeneration — with the right build, Moze never runs out of grenades and every explosion heals her. Shield of Retribution turns her into a tank with shield scaling and damage reduction. Bottomless Mags provides ammo regeneration and magazine size bonuses that let you fire indefinitely without reloading.

Best legendary weapons for Moze: Unkempt Harold (Torgue pistol, explosive spread), Flakker (Torgue shotgun, explosion wall), Laser-Sploder (Torgue AR, laser + rockets). Full build guide at Moze Build Guide and Moze Splash Build.

Zane — The Operative

Speed-based tech specialist with access to multiple gadgets simultaneously. Zane can equip two action skills at once (sacrificing grenades), making him the most mechanically complex Vault Hunter. Action skills: Holo-Clone (decoy that draws fire, can swap places), SNTNL Drone (flying turret that attacks enemies), and Barrier (deployable shield wall that blocks incoming fire).

The Hitman tree boosts kill skill effectiveness — every kill triggers a cascade of buffs that stack multiplicatively. The speed bonuses in this tree mean Zane moves significantly faster than other characters, which directly translates to faster farming runs. Under Cover tree focuses on shield and barrier mechanics. Doubled Agent tree buffs the Holo-Clone and drone interactions.

Best legendary weapons for Zane: Conference Call (Hyperion shotgun, sideways projectiles), OPQ System (Atlas AR, copy drone), Sand Hawk (Dahl SMG, 9-projectile burst). Full build guide at Zane Build Guide and Zane Speed Build.

Skill Tree Structure — How BL4 Builds Work

Each Vault Hunter has 3 skill trees with ~20 nodes each. You earn skill points from leveling (1 per level, max 50) and from completing specific challenges. A max-level character has enough points to fully invest in one tree and partially in a second, or spread across two trees evenly.

The key decision: do you go deep into one tree for the capstone skill (the final node, which is always build-defining), or dip into two trees for synergy between mid-tier skills? Most endgame builds focus on one capstone + supporting skills from a second tree. The third tree is rarely touched except for specific niche builds.
