Jakobs Manufacturer Gimmick
so the Jakobs thing is pretty simple and I like that about it because some manufacturers have these complicated gimmicks that take 20 hours to understand but Jakobs just says crit hits ricochet to a nearby enemy and the gun fires as fast as you can pull the trigger and that's it, no alternate fire mode no tracker pucks no heat gauge just pure kinetic damage and the sound design is incredible like every Jakobs gun sounds like it's made of wood and steel and it kicks like a mule and honestly after using fancy tech weapons all day coming back to a Jakobs feels like coming home

Best Jakobs Builds
honestly FL4K is the Jakobs soulmate and I've tried Jakobs on every character but nothing compares to Fade Away guaranteeing crits which triggers the ricochet and then Megavore makes every shot have a chance to crit regardless of where you hit which makes every Jakobs weapon a room-clearing monster and the ricochet bullet homes in on the nearest enemy's crit spot not just their body so a single headshot kill nearly guarantees the ricochet will also be a crit and you get these chain reactions where one shot kills three enemies and you didn't even see the other two, for class mods you basically want Bounty Hunter or Cosmic Stalker depending on whether you're going bossing or mobbing and for artifacts Victory Rush is great for general use but the Pearl of Ineffable Knowledge gives you that stacking damage bonus that synergizes perfectly with Jakobs' high per-shot damage, and for shields you pretty much always want the Re-Volter for that shock bonus damage because Jakobs guns are mostly kinetic so the shock amp helps with shield stripping and the extra damage pushes your crits into one-shot territory on most enemies
Moze can use Jakobs shotguns with Forge for infinite ammo which is honestly hilarious on the Stagecoach with 25 pellets because you just hold the trigger and everything in front of you ceases to exist, Zane benefits from fire rate bonuses making semi-auto Jakobs essentially fire like full auto while keeping the massive per-shot damage so you get the best of both worlds and it feels like cheating, Amara pairs well with Jakobs snipers because her accuracy bonuses and Phasegrasp for easy crits make the Monocle and Skullmasher feel like hitscan weapons where you just click on heads and things die instantly
Why Pick Jakobs
tbh Jakobs is the cowboy manufacturer and I mean that in the best possible way because high damage per shot crit-focused gameplay with bullets that ricochet to nearby enemies on critical hits is just pure dopamine and if you can aim even reasonably well Jakobs rewards you more than any other manufacturer in the game, the ricochet mechanic means a single well-placed headshot can clear a group of enemies and I've had moments where I fired one shot and three enemies died and I just sat there looking at the screen like did that just happen, Jakobs pistols are the gunslinger fantasy with the fan the hammer feel and high crit damage and the most satisfying mechanical sound design in the game like every shot sounds like a cannon going off and you feel the impact in your bones, shotguns fire as fast as you can pull the trigger with no fire rate cap so if you have a fast trigger finger you can dump an entire magazine in like a second and snipers reward patience and precision with massive single-shot damage that deletes whatever you're aiming at
Jakobs is for players who trust their aim and I mean there are no gimmicks like shield attachments or homing bullets or heat gauges or any of that stuff you get the idea it's just raw honest damage and the first time I used a Jakobs sniper I was like ok I literally get it now because you one-tap a badass enemy with a crit and the ricochet kills his friend standing next to him and ngl no other manufacturer feels as satisfying as that moment right there, honestly if you're new to Borderlands start with Dahl or Atlas to learn the game and stuff like that but once you're comfortable come back to Jakobs and it'll completely change how you think about gunplay in this series tbh it's kinda the purest Borderlands experience you can have
Best Vault Hunters
FL4K is the Jakobs soulmate and I'm not exaggerating when I say this is the single best character-manufacturer pairing in the entire game because Fade Away guarantees crits and Jakobs ricochets on crit so you enter Fade Away with a Jakobs shotgun and one shot turns into a room-wide chain reaction of ricochet crits that clears everything in seconds, it's a match made in Pandora and I've used this combo to clear entire Slaughter Shaft rounds without ever reloading because the ricochet chains just keep going, Amara's accuracy bonuses and Phasegrasp for easy crits make Jakobs snipers feel like hitscan weapons where you don't even need to account for bullet travel just click and things die, Zane's kill skill fire rate buffs make Jakobs pistols fire faster than some SMGs while keeping the high per-shot damage so you get SMG speed with sniper damage per bullet and it's kinda disgusting honestly, Moze benefits less directly from Jakobs compared to Vladof or COV but Jakobs splash-damage weapons like the Headsplosion work with her Demolition Woman tree and the ricochet explosions count as splash so you get all her splash bonuses on the ricochet kills which adds up fast
Hidden Mechanics
ok so the ricochet bullet does FULL damage to the secondary target not reduced damage like most games would do and it can crit again which chains to a third target and this chain can theoretically go infinite with enough enemies and perfect RNG and I've seen it happen where one shot killed like six enemies in a chain and I couldn't stop laughing, and Jakobs weapons with the masher grip fire multiple pellets per shot while only consuming one ammo which effectively doubles or triples your damage output and finding a masher grip Jakobs is like finding gold because suddenly your ammo economy is twice as good, but the fire rate on Jakobs shotguns isn't capped by a fire rate stat at all it's literally how fast you can pull the trigger so rapid-fire macros or just having fast fingers gives you absurd DPS that the weapon card doesn't even hint at or whatever, and the bolt-action Jakobs snipers have a hidden perfect-reload window similar to Gears of War active reload that gives bonus crit damage on the next shot and I didn't even know about this for my first 100 hours basically but once you learn the timing it's a free damage boost on every reload and that's the kind of hidden depth that keeps me coming back to Jakobs tbh
Early Game vs Late Game
Jakobs is fantastic early game and I always pick up a Jakobs revolver on new characters because the high per-shot damage means you're never wasting ammo and a green Jakobs revolver can literally carry you through the first half of the story without ever needing to swap, the ammo efficiency is insane because you're firing one shot at a time and each shot does so much damage that enemies just fall over and you're not wasting half your magazine on missed shots like with Vladof or Dahl full auto, late game Jakobs legendaries like the Hellwalker the Maggie and the Skullmasher are genuinely top-tier weapons that compete with anything in the game and the Wedding Invitation sniper is arguably the best cryo weapon available period, the main weakness though is shield stripping because Jakobs doesn't naturally come in shock element on most guns so you'll need a backup weapon for shielded enemies and that's honestly the only real downside, but once you get into the rhythm of swapping to a shock weapon to strip shields then finishing with a Jakobs crit it becomes second nature and the damage output is worth the extra step
Pro Tips
so the most obvious tip that somehow people still ignore is aim for the head because with Jakobs it's literally double or triple damage versus body shots and the difference between a clean headshot and just spraying center mass is night and day I mean it's actually insane how much damage you leave on the table by not aiming, the ricochet bullet homes in on the nearest enemy's crit spot not just their body so a headshot kill nearly guarantees the ricochet will also be a crit and you get these beautiful chain reactions where you aimed at one guy and two more died and stuff like that happens way more often than you'd think, and Jakobs shotguns in particular benefit massively from ADSing because the pellet spread tightens significantly and suddenly your Stagecoach with 25 pellets is hitting like 20 of them on the crit spot instead of 10, but don't sleep on Jakobs ARs either because the Clairvoyance and the Stonethrower are both excellent weapons that most people overlook and the Gatling Gun spins up to ridiculous fire rates while keeping that Jakobs per-shot damage, and if you're using FL4K the Megavore skill makes every shot have a chance to crit regardless of where you hit which combined with Jakobs ricochet means you're basically always critting and always ricocheting and the screen is just full of crit numbers and ricochet trails and dead enemies and it's honestly one of the most fun builds in the entire game ngl you owe it to yourself to try this at least once
