Honestly Arms Race in Borderlands 4 is one of the most controversial modes they've ever added and I completely understand both sides of the argument, on one hand it's a genuinely fun battle royale-style mode where you start with nothing and have to scavenge for gear which creates a tension that the main game lacks, on the other hand some of the best weapons in the game like the Plasma Coil and the Tizzy are locked behind Arms Race reward chests which means if you want those weapons you HAVE to play Arms Race whether you like it or not, here's everything you need to know to survive Arms Race and extract with the good loot

How Arms Race Works

Arms Race takes place on a map called the Stormblind Complex on Pandora and the premise is simple: you drop in with no gear no skills no action skill nothing, you scavenge weapons and equipment from chests and enemy drops across the map, kill enemies to level up your loot quality, and survive until the exfiltration point opens, the catch is that a murdercane is closing in on the map and if you get caught in it you die very quickly

Your goal is to survive long enough for the extraction point to open (usually about 10-12 minutes) and then fight your way to the exfiltration zone, once you extract any gear you're holding goes into a reward pool that you can claim in the main game, but here's the important part โ€” only the gear you EXTRACT with is saved, if you die before extraction you lose everything from that run

Best Loot in Arms Race

The main reason most players run Arms Race is for the exclusive loot that you can only get from Arms Race reward chests, these weapons are not available as world drops or boss drops anywhere else in the game:

WeaponTypeWhy It's Worth Farming
Plasma CoilMaliwan SMGBest SMG in the game, S-tier weapon on any build, massive DPS when fully charged
TizzyTediore PistolIncredible fire rate and damage for a pistol, great for Moze builds
Dark ArmyDahl SMGSpawns friendly drones that shoot with you, excellent for mobbing
BeskarShieldAbsorbs bullet damage and converts it to health, best survival shield in the game
BoogeymanVladof SniperMassive crit damage, refunds ammo on kill, great for FL4K

Drop Strategy and Map Knowledge

Your drop location in Arms Race matters enormously for your success, the map has several named locations and each one has a different loot profile, the Armory area has the highest density of weapon chests but it's also the most contested area with the most enemies, the Overlook has fewer enemies but the chests there tend to drop more defensive gear like shields and grenades which are less useful early on

The best drop strategy for a new player is to drop at the Howl of the Banshee or the Splintered Gate which are mid-density areas with a good balance of enemies and chests, don't drop on the Dead Drop unless you know the map well because it's a deathtrap with no cover and enemies on all sides, once you've looted your starting area start moving toward the center of the map where the best chests spawn as the murdercane closes in

Pro Tip: Learn the mini-map pattern for legendary chests. Legendary chests in Arms Race glow with a distinctive orange particle effect visible from about 50 meters away. If you see orange particles in the distance, that's a guaranteed legendary weapon. Prioritize reaching those chests before other players (or before the murdercane closes in if you're solo).

Survival Tips for Arms Race

The biggest mistake new Arms Race players make is treating it like the main game where you can facetank damage and rely on your build to carry you, in Arms Race you are extremely fragile and even basic enemies can kill you in a few hits, your positioning and movement are way more important than your aim, always keep cover nearby never stand in the open to reload and use the environment to funnel enemies into kill zones

Weapon priority in Arms Race is completely different from the main game too, fire rate and magazine size matter more than raw damage because you'll be fighting multiple enemies with limited ammo, a high fire rate SMG or assault rifle is better than a slow-firing sniper or rocket launcher because you need to kill quickly and efficiently, save snipers for taking out priority targets from range but don't rely on them as your primary weapon

Elemental damage is even more important in Arms Race because you can't afford to waste ammo on resistant enemies, always try to carry two different elemental weapons to cover multiple health types, a fire SMG and a corrosive pistol gives you coverage against both flesh and armor which are the most common enemy types on the Stormblind Complex

Extraction Route Planning

When the extraction timer starts ticking down you need to plan your route to the extraction point carefully, the extraction point's location is marked on the map and it's usually on the opposite side of the murdercane edge from where you dropped, the key is to move toward the extraction point early and loot along the way rather than waiting until the last minute and having to sprint through enemy territory

During the extraction phase enemies will spawn in waves near the extraction point and they get progressively harder the longer you take to extract, the strategy is to clear the extraction zone of enemies BEFORE calling in the extraction rather than calling it in and then fighting off waves while you wait, clear first call second then defend the zone for about 30 seconds while the extraction timer counts down

If you're carrying a god-roll weapon that you don't want to lose don't take unnecessary risks during extraction, it's better to extract with a mid-roll Plasma Coil than to die trying to kill that last badass and lose everything, the reward chests have multiple tiers and even a base-tier extract gives you some rewards, you don't need to fully clear the map to get value from a run

Arms Race Coop Strategies

Playing Arms Race with friends is significantly easier than solo because you can revive each other share loot and cover more ground during the scavenge phase, in a group of 4 you should split into pairs and cover opposite sides of the map during the scavenge phase then regroup at the extraction point when the timer starts, this gives you maximum loot coverage without anyone being alone and vulnerable

Communication is critical in Arms Race coop, call out weapon spawns, chest locations, and enemy positions constantly, if you find a weapon that another player's build needs ping it for them even if you could use it yourself, a coordinated team where everyone has the right gear will survive much better than a team where everyone has selfish gear choices

Honestly Arms Race grows on you once you learn the map and the rhythm of scavenge โ†’ fight โ†’ extract, it's frustrating at first because you'll die a lot to things that would be trivial in the main game but once you get your first Plasma Coil extract you'll understand why people grind this mode, just be patient learn the map and prioritize survival over heroics and the loot will come
