Honestly the debate between Mayhem 10 and Mayhem 11 in Borderlands 4 is one of those topics where everyone has an opinion and most of them are based on outdated information from BL3, the system has changed significantly in BL4 and what worked in the previous game doesn't necessarily apply here, I've spent dozens of hours testing different Mayhem levels and modifier combinations across all four Vault Hunters and here's the real truth about which Mayhem mode you should be playing and what modifiers are actually worth using
Mayhem 10 vs Mayhem 11 — The Real Difference
In Borderlands 4 Mayhem 11 works exactly the same as Mayhem 10 in terms of loot quality and XP — there is zero difference in drop rates or reward quality between M10 and M11, the only difference is that M11 has no modifiers while M10 has three random modifiers applied, enemies on M11 have the exact same health and damage scaling as M10 so the difficulty is identical from a numbers perspective
The big question is whether the modifiers on M10 are worth dealing with for what amounts to zero extra reward, and my answer after extensive testing is: it depends on your build and what you're farming, if you have a well-optimized build that can handle any modifier combination then M10 is fine because the modifiers don't slow you down much, but if your build is mid or you're farming something specific then M11 with no modifiers is almost always better because you don't risk getting modifier combos that cripple your kill speed
Best Modifiers for M10 (If You Must)
If you insist on playing M10 because you want the "challenge" or whatever, here are the modifiers you want and the ones you should immediately reroll:
| Modifier | Rating | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Healing Orbs | Best | Enemies drop healing orbs that also deal damage to nearby enemies when collected. Free sustain and extra damage. |
| Loot-Splosion | Best | Enemies explode into loot on elemental kill. More drops = more legendaries = more cash. |
| Buddy System | Good | Enemies drop aggro-drawing bots on death. More survivability, especially in mob fights. |
| Healy Stuff | OK | Cryo kills drop cash. Good supplemental income, doesn't affect combat much. |
| Post Mortem | Avoid | Enemies explode on death dealing massive damage. Sounds good but the damage is often enough to one-shot you on M10 even through shield gate. |
| Holy Spirits | Avoid | Ghost enemies that chase you and debuff you. Extremely annoying, the debuff lasts too long and stacks. |
| Drone Ranger | Avoid | Ranged drones that snipe you from off-screen. You get hit by attacks you can't see. Terrible design. |
| Chain Gang | Avoid | Enemies are linked with damage-sharing chains. Makes it impossible to focus individual targets and the chain range is huge. |
Best Modifier Combinations
If you do play M10 you want modifiers that either don't affect combat at all or actively help you, here are the best three-modifier combinations to look for:
The best possible M10 combo is Healing Orbs + Loot-Splosion + Buddy System, this gives you sustain, more loot, and distraction targets without any negative effects, the second best is Loot-Splosion + Healy Stuff + Freeze Tag which maximizes your loot and cash income but requires you to use cryo weapons to get full value out of Healy Stuff
The worst possible M10 combo that you should immediately reload to avoid is Post Mortem + Drone Ranger + Chain Gang, this combination will make you want to uninstall the game because you'll be getting one-shot by invisible explosions while drones snipe you from off-screen and enemies share damage so you can't kill anything efficiently, if you get this combo just switch to M11 and save yourself the headache
When to Drop to Lower Mayhem
Here's a truth that a lot of people won't admit: playing on Mayhem 11 when your build isn't ready is actually counterproductive because you kill so slowly that your loot per hour is lower than on Mayhem 7 or 8 where you can clear rooms in seconds, the optimal Mayhem level is the highest one where you can still kill basic enemies in 1-2 magazines and badasses in 3-4 magazines
If you're taking 3+ magazines to kill a basic bandit on M11 you need to drop down, I recommend starting at Mayhem 4 when you first unlock it and working your way up 2 levels at a time as you improve your gear, by Mayhem 8 you should have enough world-drop legendaries and decent anointments to make M11 manageable, going straight from Normal Mode to M11 is a recipe for frustration because every enemy becomes a bullet sponge and you'll burn through all your ammo in the first fight
Mayhem-Specific Farming Strategies
Different Mayhem levels are optimal for different activities, here's what I recommend:
For Leveling (1-72)
Mayhem 1 is the sweet spot for XP farming. The XP multiplier on M1 is enough to make leveling fast but enemies aren't tanky enough to slow you down. Going higher than M1 while leveling is a trap because the XP per kill doesn't scale fast enough to compensate for slower kills.
For World Drop Farming
Mayhem 11 is best because you get max loot quality with zero modifier frustration. This is what I use for 90% of my farming. Run Graveward or the Slaughter Shaft on M11 with a good build and you'll get plenty of legendaries.
For Dedicated Drop Farming
Mayhem 11 is also best for dedicated drops. The dedicated drop rate doesn't change between M1 and M11 — it's always the same percentage — but the world drop bonus loot on M11 means you get more total legendaries per kill even if the specific dedicated item rate is the same.
For Arms Race
Arms Race has its own internal scaling. Mayhem level doesn't matter for Arms Race because you start from scratch with white gear. Just play on whichever Mayhem level you're comfortable with for the rest of the game.
The Over Mayhem System
Borderlands 4 introduced the Over Mayhem system that lets you push past Mayhem 11 by stacking negative modifiers, the rewards scale slightly beyond M11 but the difficulty scaling is exponential, I've tested up to Over Mayhem 16 and honestly the extra rewards are not worth the frustration, the drop quality doesn't increase after M11 — you just get maybe 10-20% more world drops per kill for 8x the enemy health, it's a terrible tradeoff
Honestly just play on Mayhem 11 with no modifiers, it's the most efficient for farming, the most comfortable for general play, and there's no downside compared to any other Mayhem configuration, the M10 vs M11 debate is only a debate among people who haven't done the math, just pick M11 and never think about it again
