Honestly the elemental damage system in Borderlands 4 is one of the most important mechanics in the game and I'm constantly surprised by how many players ignore it, you can absolutely beat the game by just using kinetic damage on everything but you're making things about 40% harder than they need to be, the difference between using the right element against the right enemy versus just shooting them with whatever gun you have is night and day, and once you internalize the elemental chart it completely changes how you approach combat
All Element Types in Borderlands 4
Borderlands 4 has six damage types: five elemental types plus kinetic which is just regular bullet damage with no element, the five elements are Incendiary (Fire) Shock (Electric) Corrosive (Acid) Cryo (Ice) and Radiation which is the newest addition to the series, each one has unique properties status effects and enemy effectiveness that I'll break down in detail
Elemental Effectiveness Chart
| Element | Strong Against | Weak Against | Status Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Incendiary | Red Health Bars (Flesh) | Blue Health Bars (Armor), Yellow Health Bars (Shield) | Damage over time, enemy flinches |
| Shock | Yellow Health Bars (Shield) | Red Health Bars (Flesh), Blue Health Bars (Armor) | Shield damage multiplier + chain damage to nearby enemies |
| Corrosive | Blue Health Bars (Armor) | Red Health Bars (Flesh), Yellow Health Bars (Shield) | Armor melting, damage over time |
| Cryo | Blue Health Bars (Armor — minor) | Yellow Health Bars (Shield — minor) | Slow, freeze on full buildup, shatter on frozen kill |
| Radiation | Yellow Health Bars (Shield — minor) | Blue Health Bars (Armor — minor) | Nova on kill, debuff that increases damage taken |
Incendiary Damage — For Fleshy Enemies
Fire damage deals 50% bonus damage to red health bars which represent flesh — this is the most common health type in the game as most human enemies and animal enemies have red health bars, fire also applies a damage over time effect that deals a percentage of the initial hit's damage every second for about 5 seconds, the DoT ticks can crit which makes fire weapons on FL4K builds absolutely devastating because every crit DoT tick can also crit
Where fire falls off is against armored enemies (blue health bars) where it deals 50% reduced damage, and shielded enemies (yellow health bars) where it also deals about 30% reduced damage, this means fire is incredible for the first playthrough where most enemies are flesh but falls off in endgame content where Maliwan and armored COV troops are more common, always have a corrosive backup for those encounters
Shock Damage — Shield Melter
Shock damage is the king of shield stripping and deals 50% bonus damage to yellow health bars, shields appear on Maliwan troops most named enemies and all boss fights making shock one of the most versatile elements in the game, the shock status effect creates arcing chains that deal a percentage of the hit damage to nearby enemies which is fantastic for mobbing situations where enemies are grouped up
The unique thing about shock in BL4 is the chain damage passive — even a single shock tick on a shielded enemy sends arcs to nearby enemies draining their shields too, this makes shock weapons incredibly efficient against the heavy Maliwan presence in the second half of the game where many enemies will have shields, an Atlas Q-System with shock element can clear a room of shielded troops faster than any other element by chaining the shield damage across the entire group
Corrosive Damage — Armor Eater
Corrosive damage deals 50% bonus damage to blue health bars which represent armor, this is most common on COV enemies with heavy armor and loader-type enemies which are robots and mechs, the corrosive status effect creates a puddle of acid under the enemy that damages any other enemy that walks through it, which is extremely useful for area denial in tight corridors
If you're doing the Slaughter Shaft on Pandora you absolutely need a corrosive weapon because the later rounds are packed with armored COV heavies and loaders, without a good corrosive weapon those enemies take forever to kill and you'll get overwhelmed by the sheer number of them, a corrosive Flipper or Breath of the Dying makes quick work of the Slaughter Shaft's hardest rounds
Cryo Damage — Crowd Control King
Cryo damage in Borderlands 4 works differently from BL3 in a few important ways, cryo no longer deals bonus damage to armor but instead applies a stacking slow effect that builds up to a full freeze, when an enemy is frozen they cannot move attack or use abilities for 2-3 seconds and any damage you deal to a frozen enemy has a chance to "shatter" them instantly killing them if they're below 20% health
The cryo rework in BL4 makes it much more tactical than just "ice damage = more damage against x," it's the only element that provides hard crowd control and the shatter mechanic gives you a powerful execute option that no other element can match, for Zane players cryo is especially potent because many of Zane's skills interact with cryo effects and the "While SNTNL is active gain 100% cryo efficiency" anointment turns Zane into a freezing machine
Radiation Damage — The Debuff Element
Radiation is the wildcard element that debuted in Borderlands 3 and it's been refined in BL4, it doesn't have a clear strength or weakness against any health type — it deals roughly neutral damage to everything — but its real power is in the status effect which creates a radiation nova on kill that damages all nearby enemies and applies a debuff that makes them take 15% more damage from all sources for 10 seconds
This debuff stacks with itself meaning if you kill multiple irradiated enemies in quick succession you can keep the 15% damage increase up permanently, this makes radiation weapons excellent support options for coop play where your team benefits from the debuff, and it's also great for mobbing builds where you're killing enemies rapidly and maintaining the debuff on everything around you
Elemental Procs and Anointments
The elemental proc rate in BL4 is determined by the weapon's "status effect chance" stat which varies by manufacturer and weapon type, Maliwan weapons generally have the highest proc chance while Jakobs has the lowest, Dahl and Vladof are in the middle, there are also class mods and artifacts that increase your status effect damage and chance so if you're building around a specific element invest in those stats
The most important elemental anointments to look for are "while action skill is active deal 100% bonus elemental damage with [element]" which effectively doubles your elemental damage during your action skill, and "on action skill start apply [element] to all weapons for 10 seconds" which lets you bypass the elemental triangle by adding bonus damage of a specific element to any gun regardless of its base element, the latter is particularly good on Zane because his action skills have very short cooldowns and he can keep the bonus up almost permanently
Honestly once you learn the elemental triangle — fire beats flesh, shock beats shields, corrosive beats armor — and understand what each status effect does you will immediately notice a huge difference in your kill speed and survivability, the players who say elements don't matter are the same players who take three magazines to kill a badass that would have died in half a mag to the right element, check our manufacturer guide to see which weapons offer the best elemental options for your build
