Honestly money in Borderlands 4 is one of those resources that seems completely pointless during the early game because you're always loot-rich from quest rewards and enemy drops, but then you hit max level and suddenly you're staring at SDU upgrade costs of 3 million dollars per level and wondering how you're supposed to afford max ammo reserves and bank storage, I've been there and it's frustrating, the good news is that there are some really efficient cash farms in BL4 that can make you millions per hour once you know what you're doing

Why You Actually Need Cash

Before we get into the farming methods let me explain why cash matters in Borderlands 4 because a lot of players ignore it until they absolutely need it, the biggest cash sink is SDU upgrades on Sanctuary III which expand your ammo reserves backpack space bank storage and lost loot capacity, the last few levels of each SDU cost between 2-5 million each and there are about 50 total SDU upgrades across all categories meaning you need roughly 80-100 million cash to max everything out on a single character

Other cash expenses include respeccing your skill tree which costs about 150,000 at max level buying ammo from vending machines at a rate of about 10,000 per visit the gun gun on Sanctuary III which costs 250 cash per shot but can give you random gear and tipping Moxxi for the Hail and Crit legendary weapons which costs about 50,000 total each, so cash is definitely not useless in the endgame and the SDU upgrades especially are game-changing for your quality of life

The Loot-Selling Method (Passive Cash)

The single most reliable source of cash in Borderlands 4 is simply selling loot that you pick up during your normal farming runs, if you're already farming bosses like Graveward or the Ruiner you should be filling your entire backpack with legendaries and purples every few runs and selling everything that isn't a god roll, at Mayhem 10/11 a single legendary sells for 20,000-40,000 depending on its parts and a full backpack of 40 items sells for roughly 800,000 to 1.5 million

The trick to maximizing your loot-selling income is to use the Bank SDU on Sanctuary III as a secondary inventory, fill your backpack then go to Sanctuary fill your bank then go back to farming, when your bank is full go sell everything at once with a Loaded Dice artifact equipped because Loaded Dice actually increases the sell value of items by a small percentage on top of its luck bonus, it's not a huge difference but over thousands of sold items it adds up

The Fastest Cash Farm: Graveward + Loot-Splosion

If you want active cash farming the combination of Graveward farming and the Loot-Splosion Mayhem modifier is the fastest way to make money in the game, here's the setup:

Graveward Cash Farm Setup

Set Mayhem to 10 and roll the Loot-Splosion modifier which makes enemies drop more loot when killed with elemental damage, use a fire-element weapon since Graveward's crit spot is week to fire, equip a Loaded Dice artifact for the sell value bonus, and farm Graveward in about 15-20 seconds per kill. Each kill drops 5-10 items minimum, most are purple+ quality. Sell everything except god rolls. Expected income: 2-4 million per 10 minutes.

The reason Graveward is the best for this is the zero-travel-time respawn, you kill him pick up all the loot fast travel back to the start loot the chests and then kill him again within 30 seconds, compare that to any other boss farm where you have to save-quit and reload which takes 30-60 seconds per cycle and Graveward is clearly superior for pure cash per minute

The Ruiner Ruin Farm

The Ruiner on Xylourgos is another excellent cash farm that's actually better than Graveward if you have a good mobbing build, the reason is that the Ruiner fight spawns dozens of small Vault Monster adds during the fight and each of those adds drops loot that can be sold, a single Ruiner run can net you 30+ item drops which is more than any other boss in the game, the downside is the Ruiner fight takes longer than Graveward so your cash per minute ends up being roughly similar despite the higher raw item count

The strategy for Ruiner cash farming is to ignore the boss's crit spots on the first phase and focus on killing the adds quickly, use a weapon with splash or chain damage like the Flipper or Plasma Coil to kill multiple adds per shot, then when the adds stop spawning you finish the boss with whatever you have left, pick up everything and sell it all, expect about 3-5 million per 15 minutes if you're efficient

Vending Machine Arbitrage (The Brain Drain Method)

Here's a niche trick that some players use for passive cash, there's a Mayhem modifier called "Healy Stuff" that makes enemies drop piles of cash when they're killed while affected by cryo, combined with a cryo weapon you can generate huge amounts of raw cash from any farming run, it's not as lucrative as selling loot but it's instant cash that doesn't take up inventory space so it's good supplemental income while you're farming for other things

Another vending machine trick is the "buy green sell purple" strategy where you check the weapon vending machines on Sanctuary III for purple weapons with good parts that you can buy and resell for a profit, this is very unreliable and I honestly wouldn't waste time on it unless you happen to be checking the machines anyway, the time spent running between machines is better spent farming Graveward

Money Management Tip: Prioritize backpack and bank SDU upgrades over ammo SDUs. More inventory space = more loot per run = more cash from selling. Ammo SDUs are important for certain builds but they're the last thing you should max out because you can always buy ammo from vending machines for pocket change. Upgrade in this order: Backpack → Bank → Lost Loot → Ammo (specific type your build uses most) → All other ammo.

TVHM Cash Multiplier

Something that a lot of players don't realize is that True Vault Hunter Mode (TVHM) has an inherent cash drop multiplier compared to Normal Mode, enemies drop about 30-50% more cash in TVHM and the vending machine prices for selling items are also slightly higher, if you've already completed the main story you should be farming on TVHM or Mayhem Mode exclusively because the cash difference is significant over long farming sessions

The cash multiplier stacks with Mayhem levels too so on TVHM Mayhem 10 you're getting the maximum possible cash drop rate in the game, this is another reason why Graveward farming on M10 is the optimal cash farm because you're getting the TVHM multiplier the M10 loot multiplier and the sheer volume of items to sell all at the same time

Side Quest Cash Rewards

If you still have side quests available many of them give large one-time cash rewards that can help you afford early SDU upgrades, some of the highest cash-reward quests include "The Feeble and the Furious" on Pandora which gives 75,000 cash "Raiders of the Lost Rock" on Eden-6 which gives 50,000 + a legendary and "The Legend of McSmoggy" on Promethea which gives 100,000 cash

Save these side quests for when you hit max level and turn them in with a Loaded Dice equipped for maximum cash, because the cash reward scales with your level and Mayhem tier so turning in a 75,000 cash quest at level 72 M10 can give you 300,000+ instead

Honestly once you get into a rhythm of Graveward farming on M10 with Loot-Splosion you'll be swimming in cash without even trying, the first few SDU upgrades are expensive but after you max out backpack and bank space you'll find that the cash accumulates faster than you can spend it, and at that point money becomes the least of your worries because the real endgame grind is getting perfect anointments on your gear, not affording ammo, check our complete farming guide for more strategies and our endgame guide for what to do once you're rich and maxed out
