Honestly leveling a second or third character in Borderlands 4 is such a drag compared to your first playthrough because you already know the whole story and you just want to get to max level so you can jump into Mayhem modes and start farming, the good news is that there are some really efficient XP farms in BL4 that can take you from level 1 to max level in a few hours if you do it right, I have powerleveled four characters to 72 now and I've refined the process down to a science so here is everything you need to know about leveling fast in Borderlands 4
First Playthrough: Just Play the Game
Here is the thing that speedrunners won't tell you: on your very first playthrough you should just play the game normally and enjoy the story because the campaign scales to your level and there's no benefit to rushing, you'll naturally hit around level 35-40 by the time you finish the main story, True Vault Hunter Mode will take you to about 55-60 and then you can grind the last 12 levels in Mayhem Mode which is where the real XP multipliers kick in, trying to powerlevel your first character is honestly a waste of time because you don't have access to the high-XP areas or Moxxi's Endowment until you've beaten the story at least once
The Fastest Leveling Method: Slaughter Shaft
The undisputed king of XP farming in Borderlands 4 is the Slaughter Shaft on Pandora, specifically the Circle of Slaughter event in The Splinterlands, once you have it unlocked and you're on at least Mayhem 1 the XP per run is absolutely insane compared to anything else in the game, here's how to do it efficiently:
Slaughter Shaft XP Farm Setup
Set Mayhem to 1 (NOT higher — higher Mayhem makes enemies too tanky and slows down your kill rate to the point where you actually earn LESS XP per hour), equip a Moxxi's Endowment artifact which gives +10-15% bonus XP, and run with a multiplayer party of 2-4 players for the scaling XP bonus. Focus down badass enemies first because they give significantly more XP than regular mobs. A good run of all 5 rounds gives roughly 1-2 levels from 50-65 and about half a level from 65-72. Repeat until max.
Moxxi's Endowment — The Essential XP Relic
Moxxi's Endowment is a mission reward from the side quest "The Importance of Being Ernest" on Eden-6 and it gives a flat 10%-15% bonus to all XP gained depending on the roll, and here's the thing — if you're on your second playthrough you can get this at a higher level and the percentage scales slightly with level so you want the highest level version you can get, the most important thing to know is that the XP bonus applies to ALL sources of XP including quest completions enemy kills and challenge completions so it's literally free extra levels just for wearing it in your artifact slot
The way to farm a max-roll Moxxi's Endowment is to save the quest on TVHM or Mayhem mode until you're at max level then turn it in and if the roll is bad you can dashboard quit before the autosave hits and reload to try again, it's tedious but a max roll of 15% makes a noticeable difference over the course of grinding from 65 to 72
The Scraptrap Nest Infinite XP Glitch
Okay so there is an XP exploit in the Scraptrap Nest DLC area that still works as of July 2026 and honestly it's the fastest XP in the game if you don't mind feeling a little bit dirty about it, here's how it works: go to the Scraptrap Nest on Xylourgos and start the fight, kill all the scraptraps EXCEPT one named Scraptrap Prime, leave the area just enough to reset the encounter then come back and all the scraptraps will respawn including the boss, you can keep doing this as long as you don't kill Scraptrap Prime and the scraptraps keep spawning infinitely
With a Moxxi's Endowment equipped and on Mayhem 1 this method can get you about 5-6 levels per hour at the highest levels which is faster than any other farm I've tested, the downside is it's mind-numbingly boring and you will hate the sound of scraptrap screams by the time you're done, put on a podcast and zone out for a couple hours
Boss Farming for XP (And Loot)
If you're going to grind XP you might as well get loot at the same time, these bosses give excellent XP alongside their dedicated drops and are worth farming when you need both:
| Boss | Location | XP per Kill | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Graveward | Eden-6 — Floating Tomb | Very High | Fast kills, easy farm route, drops many legendaries |
| Rampager | Nekrotafeyo — Desolate Sands | High | Rowan's Call, reliable XP + loot combo |
| Killavolt | Pandora — Lectra City | Medium-High | Monarch, decent XP during Monarch farming |
| Traunt | Athenas — Cathedral | Medium | Fast respawn, zero travel time |
Bonus XP Sources and Multipliers
There are several ways to stack XP bonuses in Borderlands 4 and they all stack multiplicatively so using multiple sources at once gives you insane returns, first is the Moxxi's Endowment relic which we covered above and gives 10-15%, second is the Borderlands Science machine on Sanctuary III where you can earn XP booster tokens from the matching mini-game, these give 10-25% bonus XP for 30 minutes and are massively overlooked by most players
Third is joining a coop session where the game scales XP per player count, with 4 players you get roughly 40-50% more XP per kill compared to solo because enemies have more health and reward more XP, this is the single biggest XP multiplier available and it doesn't cost you anything except finding three people to play with, the BL4 Discord is the best place to find leveling groups
Fourth is the seasonal events which often have double XP weeks tied to events like Bloody Harvest or Revenge of the Cartels, during these weeks you can expect to level about twice as fast so check the official Borderlands Twitter for announcements about upcoming bonus XP events
Leveling Build Recommendations
You don't need a full endgame build while leveling but the right skill choices save you hours of grinding, for all Vault Hunters prioritize skills that give you passive damage and survivability rather than active ability damage because your action skill cooldown is long while leveling and you'll be relying on gun damage most of the time
For Moze focus on Bottomless Mags early for infinite ammo and consistent damage, for Zane focus on the Hitman tree for kill skill synergy, for Amara focus on Mystical Assault for the action skill cooldown reduction, and for FL4K focus on the Stalker tree for Fade Away and crit damage, check our specific Vault Hunter build guide for full leveling trees
Honestly the fastest way to max level in 2026 is a combination of getting carried through the Slaughter Shaft on Mayhem 1 with a Moxxi's Endowment and a full 4-player party, if you can get a friend who's already max level to run you through the Slaughter Shaft at Mayhem 10 while you sit at the entrance and collect XP you can go from 1-72 in about 3 hours, which is absurdly fast but it does require a friend willing to carry you so maybe buy them a pizza or something as thanks
