Look I get it, sometimes you've farmed a boss 500 times and still don't have the anointment you want, or you want to test a build before committing the respecc cash, or you just don't have the time to grind for hours every day, save editing is a legitimate way to enjoy Borderlands 4 on your own terms and honestly Gearbox has never banned anyone for it since BL2 days so it's about as safe as modding gets, but you do need to know what you're doing to avoid corrupting your save or getting your character bricked, here's everything I've learned from years of save editing Borderlands games
Is Save Editing Safe?
Short answer: yes, if you do it right. Long answer: Gearbox has a very clear policy of not caring about save editing, they've never issued bans for edited saves in any Borderlands game, the only time they've taken action is against online cheating in the competitive Arms Race leaderboards and even then it's just leaderboard removal not account bans, the Shift code system and online features work fine with edited saves and there's no anti-cheat scanning your files
The real risk with save editing is corrupting your save file by editing something in a way the game doesn't expect, for example if you give yourself a weapon with invalid parts or a skill point allocation that violates the tree requirements the game might crash when trying to load that data, the key is to only edit numbers and values that make logical sense and never try to create "impossible" items that don't exist in the game's data
Best Save Editors for BL4
| Tool | Platform | Best For | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| BL4 Save Editor (Gibbed fork) | PC | Full control, gear editing, skill editing | Most comprehensive, writes to .sav files directly |
| BL4 Profile Editor | PC | Guardian Rank, bank slots, cosmetics | Edit profile-wide data like skins and SDUs |
| Weapon Editor Online | Web | Quick weapon creation | Browser-based, no download needed |
| Save Wizard | PS4/PS5 | Console save editing | Paid tool, only option for console players |
The most popular tool is the BL4 Save Editor which is a community fork of the classic Gibbed save editor, it gives you a full GUI where you can see every variable in your save file including skills gear inventory bank slots quest progress and fast travel unlocks, the interface takes some getting used to but it's the most powerful tool available and it's completely free
Safe vs Risky Edits
Not all edits are created equal, here's what's completely safe, what's risky, and what you should never do:
Safe Edits (No Risk)
Changing your Golden Key count, adding eridium, adding cash, unlocking all fast travel points, unlocking cosmetic items (skins heads trinkets), changing your Guardian Rank level and token allocation, editing your active Mayhem level, unlocking all weapon manufacturers' parts for crafting, and respeccing your skill tree for free. These are all simple number changes that the game treats as if you earned them normally.
Moderate Risk Edits
Adding specific legendary weapons with specific parts and anointments is safe as long as you only create items with valid part combinations that actually exist in the game, the risk is if you try to create a weapon with a part that doesn't belong to that manufacturer or an anointment that doesn't exist on that weapon type, the game will either strip the invalid parts on load or crash, always use the "generate from parts" feature rather than manually assigning part IDs
Dangerous Edits (Avoid)
Never edit your character's level above the max level cap (72 as of July 2026), never give yourself more than the maximum skill points for your level, never create gear with impossible stats like 9999 damage or negative values, never modify weapon IDs to non-existent entries, never edit mission progress flags in a way that skips story triggers irreversibly — these WILL corrupt your save and the corruption is often not fixable
How to Backup Saves
Before you do literally anything with a save editor, back up your saves, the save file location on Steam is Documents/My Games/Borderlands 4/Saved/SaveGames/[SteamID]/ and the files are named with numbers like 1.sav 2.sav etc., each file corresponds to a character slot and there's also a profile.sav file that stores your global data like Guardian Rank and bank slots
The simplest backup method is to copy the entire SaveGames folder to your desktop before making any edits, if something goes wrong just delete the edited saves and copy the backups back, you should also make separate backups before and after major game patches because updates can change the save format and an editor written for an older version might produce incompatible files
Console Save Editing (PS5, Xbox Series)
Console save editing is more limited than PC but it's still possible, the only option is Save Wizard which is a paid tool that costs about $60 USD, it works by letting you download your save from the PS5 or Xbox cloud storage to a USB drive, then using the Save Wizard software on PC to modify the save, then uploading it back to your console
Save Wizard has pre-made "quick codes" for common edits like max money max eridium and max keys, but it doesn't give you the same level of control as the PC save editor because you can't edit individual gear items, for console players the best approach is to use the quick codes for currency and keys and leave gear editing alone since it's not worth the risk on a paid tool
Cross-Platform Save Transfer for Editing
Here's a neat trick: if you have the game on both PC and console through cross-progression you can edit your save on your PC and then sync it back to your console through the Shift cloud save system, this gives you PC-level save editing power on your console character but it does require owning the game on both platforms which is a big ask
The process is: play on console to update your cloud save, open the game on PC and let it download the cloud save, edit the save with the BL4 Save Editor, play on PC to upload the edited save to the cloud, then load it on console, it works seamlessly because the save format is identical across platforms and the Shift cloud sync doesn't validate the save integrity, it just syncs whatever is in your save folder
Legitimate Uses of Save Editing
Honestly I use save editing mostly for testing builds before committing hours of farming to them, I'll give myself a full set of gear with the anointments I'm considering for a build take them to the firing range and the Slaughter Shaft to test the damage numbers and if the build works well I'll then go farm the gear legitimately knowing it's worth my time, this saves me from wasting hours farming for a build that I end up hating after 10 minutes
I also use it to fix bugs, if a quest item disappears from my inventory and I can't progress or a legendary despawns before I can pick it up the save editor is the only way to get it back without reverting to an old save and losing hours of progress, and sometimes I just don't have time to farm but want to play the endgame content with a friend, in which case I'll craft a reasonable set of gear (not god rolls, just functional gear) so I can keep up without asking my friends to carry me
Save editing is a tool like any other — it can enhance your experience or ruin it depending on how you use it, if you just give yourself perfect gear with perfect anointments the game becomes boring because there's nothing to work toward, but if you use it responsibly to skip the worst grind or test builds it can make the game more enjoyable without removing the incentive to play, just be smart about it and always back up your saves
